Lightbulb Can a heated mirror replace a non-heated model?

I'm in Wisconsin and we just got hit with A LOT of SNOW. The roads are much more narrow with the amount accumulating on the side of the road. I had parked my truck and someone couldn't get around my drivers side mirror. It shattered after being hit (I'm guessing, as I did not see what happened). The molding and mirror are both broken. It looks like a replacement will run around $70.00. That price is the same for heated vs. non-heated.

Can the heated mirror be used instead of the non-heated one? If so, does it hook up to the defrost button already in the truck? Does anyone know how to install this or if it would work?

Thanks much!

lk

There is a separate defrost button for heated mirrors. It's below the windshield defrost button.

you can take your glass off of your mirror then you can see if a defrost wire is running under it.

Just pull on the glass and it pops out.

Only difference is the feed wire to the mirror heaters. If you're not wired for it you can add a pair, but make sure switch and fuse it properly.

Not to give you a hard time but you could have avoided this little expense by simply folding the mirror in when you parked it.

hey sorry to hear about the mirror. The weather here is crazy and were supposed to get more! I don't know anyone who folds in their mirrors when they park.

When I go up to SF if I don't fold my mirrors in someone else does. Luckily whenever they are folded in it seems people do so kindly cause there is never any damage or anything seeming out of place.

As for putting in heated mirrors you can wire it in yourself using a relay, a switch, some wire, and a fuse. if you have a defrost for the back window just splice into that (still using the relay) or run the relay between the ignition switch on a wire that is only on when the key is on and the switch you install for the mirror (that way the mirror can only be on when the key is on and you don't come out to a dead truck). Someone else probably has a better idea but off the top of my head that's what I got.
Good luck

Hey Tbird... I wanna know your checklist of things to do after you park your vehicle and get out. Folding the mirrors? Well why don't you take the wheels off so they don't get stolen? Why not take out your complete stereo system so no one breaks in and steals it? Everyone on here is a smart-*** but come on don't be a poster child for it! Just sayin...

The hardest part is taking the bedliner with me so nobody steals that. Can't tell you the weird looks I get walking around with it in the mall.

How lazy are you? How much effort does it take to fold the mirror in on a tight street to keep it from being damaged? I have to park on the street at work, I fold the drivers mirror in to make sure that one of the many semi's that come through don't "modify" it for me. If I'm a poster child for smart-asses what are you a poster child for? I'm guessing laziness and ignorance. Just sayin....

So I suppose that if you get door dinged in an empty parking lot I could say you should have walked to the store. I don't want you to be lazy! Come on, people drive their trucks and use them all day. Stuff happens and it is just un avoidable sometimes. But its hard to explain that to someone who takes every possible precaution to avoid any incedent that could possibly occur. What happens when it rains? Do you whip out your car cover everyday? How about wrapping your entire truck in foam so noone door dings you? 'Cause we don't want to be labeled lazy. But I'm lazy and ignorant. So what do I know right? I certainly can't control weather/animals/other people the way you can so I don't have "incidents" with my truck. I guess I might as well walk everywhere. But I would probably be lazy and forget to PAM the bottom of my shoes to avoid the gum on the sidewalk.

Do you listen to yourself when you talk? I ask because if you did then you would hear just how ridiculous what your saying sounds. You make my post about folding the mirror sound like the dumbest thing you ever heard. Why do you think they are made to fold? They fold TO PREVENT DAMAGE in tight situations.

I'm almost afraid to post and add to the flame, but here goes.

Yes, I too have folded my mirrors when parking in a tight parking lot.

Lord forgive me........

I'm not saying I have never folded in my own mirrors, but to do it every time I park is unrealistic. I'm sure the original thread starter didn't realize it was too tight of a road untill after the fact. Hindsight is 20/20. I now know when in Downtown Dallas to remove my GPS or it will be stolen. I know this because it happend to me two weeks ago. You can't prevent everything from happening and my reply to yours originally was to show that you said it could have been avoided, true, but unrealistic to say that you can be prepared for everything. Sometimes **** happens and that is the way it is. I just thought you being a smart @ss was not helping the original problem. So I decided to make you hear it. Get over it. I'm sure he felt bad enough for not folding it in to begin with, but you telling him is not helping him answer his question.
