Antifreeze smell and truck instantly fogs up

05 Supercew, 80,000 km's (50K miles)

This has happened twice now, once last Sunday and the next time I drove my truck, today. Both times around -20 C (-4 F) I warm the truck up while I remove all the snow, I then get in and start driving. After about 5 minutes I get the smell of antifreeze and the truck inside windows instantly and completely fog up. Today it was so bad I had to pull over and sit there till it cleared. Then about 10 minutes later same thing, a whiff of antifeeze and the whole truck instantly fogged up. Could my heater core already be shot at this low of a mileage? Any other known issues with this?

Yup..

heater core

If you have a faulty ground somewhere that is putting current into your coolant, the resulting electrolysis will eat your heater core in no time.

Shoot, I don't think it is, I am out of the bumper-to-bumper. What is the cost on a heater core replacement?

As for a fault ground, the damn truck is 100% stock. If this is going to cost me 1000 bucks to fix it will be my last Ford. This was their last chance, my 03 Sport Trac was a lemon, and now this is going to cost me big bucks with relatively low mileage on it.

maybe its the blend door, b.c defrost is the default position.

but sounds more like a heater core. You can do it yourself in a full saturday, and parts you are lookin at maybe 200ish. Ive never priced a heater core out, so thats just a guess

Not with the weather we are having, there is a foot of snow on the ground and it is around -4F. I don't have a shop.

it's the heater core, steam on the window and that sweet smell of your check book burning.
The core it self is the cheap part, removing the dash and I mean the entire dash is the high dollar part

Yeah, not the blend door, fogs up way to fast for that, it is an instant and complete fogging of every window.

I have been calling around and if that is the problem it is 8 hours labour plus the part, so I am looking at around 1000 cnd to get this fixed. It is booked in on Monday so I will see what happens.

Time to trade it in at a dealer that isn't aware of the problem or sell it to someone you don't know "as is".

Duke

EDIT: I take the second part back. I'd feel to guilty doing that to someone. But a dealership isn't a someone, it's a lot of others, combined to a something that's probably already screwed you over at least twice for a lot more then $1,000.

Mine kind of does the same thing. It doesnt fog up the windows and only happens if i go from AC on to The heater. Its kind of cold in the mornings so i turn the heater on but then when i go to lunch its hot so i have the ac on then at night i turn the heater back on but it has like a musty smell. Its nasty. Is that the heater core also or something else? Thanks guys.

That's just the musty smell from the condensation in your ductwork from the AC.

Sound like your condensate drain is plugged up. That will allow water to gather and mildew to grow resulting in the funky smell you describe.

When you park with the A/C running does water drip out on the ground around the pass. side foot well area underneath the truck? If it does, the drain is probably OK. Might want to check it before taking it in.

get off your ars, turn the a/c on for 5min, if water is dripping from right side you are good, if not then find the drain and poke or blow it open. Dealer aint touching my truck for that little thing.
