Wind noise anybody?

I searched the forums already, and I come up with plenty of info. about leaking windshields for water. Mine so far seems to only be air. Any speeds above 35 or so and it sounds like the windshield is cracked open or something. Dealer's had it out twice to reseal and it sounds terrible at 50+. Not so noticeable with tunes playing, but still driving me nuts. Anybody with an '04 or newer, is yours silent ? I've never heard anything like this out of any vehicle. Thanks.

Do you have the bugguard thing on the front? This is known to cause excessive wind noise. I have the bugguard & the noise; my father took his guard off and no noise!

Unless you're absolutely sure the windshield is the culprit, I'd also take a look at your air intake (assuming you have the OEM air intake). Inside the engine compartment, a plastic ring secures the air intake tube to the driver's side fenderwell. I've noticed that this ring doesn't always hold the tube to the fenderwell securely. The result is a "howling" noise from the front left side of the truck, and it seems particularly noticeable above 35 MPH. This noise could be easily mistaken for a leaky windshield.

Even if your intake tube appears to be securely fastened, try turning the plastic ring approximately 180* and pushing the tube into the connection with moderate force. It may take a few tries to get it right, but this helps to reseat the connection and usually eliminates most of the noise.

This method worked for me, but it hasn't worked for everyone. Others have had to resort to more radical methods, such as applying sound deadening foam around the intake connection itself.

Good luck!

No bug guard. I will check the intake, but I've heard intakes before and this sounds like wind. Happens when the truck is running anywhere above 35; like this morning, we took it to 50, climate contl. off, no radio, coasting now, so should be somewhat reduced intake. We're hearing what sounds like turbulent wind from the front. I think the dealer gave up on it. About ready to sell it because of this. So my question remains, are your trucks quiet?

I hear a slight (but definately noticable) whistling sound as well. It's annoying but I just figured it was just another truck noise. I think I might have to take my truck in now to get it checked out.

I have the bug guard, although it's the short one, and the only time I can hear wind noise is when I'm above 70 mph, turn off everything, and lean way forward up near the steering wheel. It's not a bother, in fact I was/am really impressed with how quiet this truck is. 2004 F150 XL Reg cab, long bed, 4.6.

Just throwing stuff out there... do you have a satellite radio antenna on the edge of your roof? Are your wiper blades down in the proper position? I would imaging the dealership would have looked for this, but......

My truck is really too quiet. An empty candy bar wrapper or cigarette package can be heard rattling around at road speeds. Doesn't seem like a truck should be that quiet. Hope you can find what's making noise in yours.

Thanks for the help. Just talked to a guy in the parking lot here at work and he says his '06 does the same thing. Definitely not the quietest truck on the road.

Somethings not right.

I have a 2005 Supercrew and a 2005 work truck. both are very quiet. No wind noise.

Have you tried putting tape around the windshield to see if the noise stops.

If it doesn't then you have another problem.

good luck.

I have an '04 and it is one of the quietest vehicles not just trucks I've ever been in.

I want to get a set of Vent Shades for the windows but I'm scared it will screw up the quietness.

My truck is very quiet, but seems that I recall some have a wind noise that was stopped by putting some tape under the wind shield seal.

It is definetly the seal. My stock windshield was super quiet but when i got it replaced they didn't seal it right and the noise was horrible it even leaked water. I just had it replaced and it is quiet again.

Thumbs up I feel your pain, brother!!

I had this problem with my 06. It sounded like the defrost was on full blast. I had a time getting the SOB's to change it. They told me it was the factory bug deflector. I said bullsh*t, and went home and took it off. Same noise. Then they tried to squirt some urethane under the seal. No luck. I finally called another dealer to see what they thought. They told me to call Ford about it. They told me a Ford Service Engineer was available to come drive my truck, and only he could authorize a windshield replacement. They also told me that the seal comes with the windshield and you couldn't order them seperately. They also told me that Ford is aware of the problem, and they are currently trying to come up with a fix for the problem. Anyway, he authorized the new windshield and it fixed the problem. Only now I have this little whistle above 80 mph. I put the bug deflector back on and now the whistle is gone. Hope this helps.

Yeah, it CAN'T be right. I've never heard anything like this. They had the windshield out twice. It might even be worse. I notice one of the wipers fluttering a little so I'll check that. This weekend I'll try painters tape around the seal.

Talking Probably won't help

I tried that with mine. I bought that wide green 3M tape that painters use. I went all the way around, and extra in the corners. No good. Did they just take out the windshield and reseal it, or did they replace the windshield and the seal? That's what they need to do. That's what they did to mine. Call Ford. Their customer service is really good, and the lady that talked to me could have worked for one of those 1-900 phone services!! But seriously, I know exactly what you are going through. Ford customer service called me back to check on the progress, they called me when the new windshield came in, they got the dealership off their fat a$$es to fix it, and they followed up with me to make sure I was completely satisfied with the repair. I'm glad to know that Ford at least seems to care about their customers. At least that's how I took it. Now all I have to do is send them that lovely survey they sent me...

My 06 has wind noise, above 50mph. It is the bottom of windshield/dash area in center. Sounds like defrosts on low/medium. Already pulled wiper arms and cowls off, dumped a tube of rv silicone across entire bottom of windshield and put a bead of black across the top. There is no way it is coming from the windshield. The entire bottom is smoothed out with caulk now. Dealer had glass guy look at it as well. My caulk job was too good here, no way. I was planning on removing front license plate anyway so maybe that is contributing. I have put black duct tape along all seams in heat shields on firewall under hood as well. Seems worse in cold weather. Compared to all the mechanical issues with my 04 and 05 ( ring and pinion gears, clutch packs, drive shaft clunk, steering wheel clicking, dash squeaks, rough 1-2 trans shift, PCM reflash ) this little wind noise is the only issue with my 06 so I can live with it. I just turn on Sirius - Buzzsaw - all the time now.
