7 Pin OEM Trailer Harness Replacement

I was trying to convert my Ford 4 Pin OEM harness over to a 7 Pin harness. I want to avoid splicing into the wiring. What do you recommend?

Note: I have already tried the Draw-Tite 18247 that is specially made just for this prupose, but it does not fit. The connectors are not the same and the relay that comes with it does not go where the directions say it should go. Also, there is a smaller Relay already there.

I think there is a way you can get a 4 way pigtail connect that to your truck and then the 4 wires can be wired to your 7 way plug. Also why are you going with a 7 way plug???

MeanGene Your saying your truck came with a factory 4 pin. I wonder if you bought the 7/4 pine oem connector would it connect to the oem plug under the truck. I would like to think the main harness has them in it, maybe not but worth a look. You would have to trace the harness on your 4 pine back to the plug and then look at a new one from the dealer.
Do you have a connector under the dash that the break controller would go to?

Does your '04 have the towing package? My '04 came with a 7 pin and a 4 pin connector as part of the towing package.

Yes, it has the towing package, but only a 4 pin connector.

Interesting, I wonder why Ford would build some with both connectors and some with only one. I would try the local Ford parts department, they should have something tailor made for your '04.

I just looked at my sticker and it says that I have the 4 pin trailer wiring and the optional 7050# GVWR Package. I also have an unsed grey 6 pin connector under the drivers side with 5 pins in it. I am not sure if this is the towing package.

That sounds like that's it. I bet the oem harness to the rear of the truck has all the wires in it too. I would look for the main connector unplug it and see if it has all the pins/wires in it. I now the one on my old 02 was around the drivers side axle. I had to replace it when I twisted it beyond repair. It should be easy to find. I may be wrong but I think you could buy the 7/4 pin, pug it in and it would work.

Can you tell me if one of the connectors was round and the other was squarish or were they both squarish? Did you need to install the relay, or was there already one there?

A picture of the Trailer connections on my 2004.

A picture of the Draw-Tite harness connectors.

How do you get a Square plug into a round hole?

Did I get the wrong kit from Draw-Tite or is there something different about my Truck.

My truck did not come with the tow package and I had to install receiver myself. When I started to look at the wiring I noticed that all the wiring was done underneath, just the last two feet or so were not connected/installed. I simply went to the Ford dealer and asked them for the factory 7 pin wire harness and they had it in stock. It was as simple as plug in the harness at the connector point near the spare tire and then just mount it to your rear bumper. I believe all the new Ford trucks come with the wiring pre-installed all the way back to the spare, it's just a matter of getting the last two feet of the harness that you're looking for. I believe the last piece of that harness was about $50 - $75 bucks. Ask your dealer and it will be an easy fix

All that kit is doing is splicing a 7 pin connector into your truck. When you unplug that one square one you now have two square plugs...Thats where you plug the draw-tite splice kit into, hence the 2 square plugs. You keep the round connector plugged in. You get it?

Hey that was it. DUHHHHHH, I was thinking it completely replaced the old harness.

It's in, now all I need is a hitch. My custom beer opener comes with the trailer
