1 new key costs $125!?!?!

So, I have only 1 key since I bought my truck and they didn't have another (so they said).

I went to the dealership to have one made and found out that the key costs $35 and to program it costs $90! WHAT THE HELL!?!?

Are there any other cost friendly alternative besides spending that kind of cash on a freekin' key?

I'm in the same 'boat' as you...I asked the dealer to contact the previous owner to see if there was another key they never turned and if they would send it. He did , there was , and they didn't...

Enough of the Fancy-Shmancy security Bull...a normal key would be fine. Another case of 'over-engineering'...that's why a friggin' pickup truck costs 40 Grand .

Besides getting one that just unlocks your doors, I'm not aware of anyother option.

But as far as how much the key cost, it is a complete rip off!!

I just had one made but it was only $78, so I got ripped off, but wow they are really sticking it to you!

I got my truck last month and it only had one key also... So i said i want another one and they gave it to me for 40$ and they told me the original cost was 80-90$. I still think 40 was a rip off

As long as you have the 2 original keys its not that hard to add a third. I did that right after I bought my truck. The owners manual tells you how to program a third, but like I said you need the original 2.

I know it's too late for those posting here who have already long since taken possession of their truck. But, I will never purchase a vehicle (new/used) with only one (1) key. That's just taking too much of a risk. I will demand that the dealership/seller provide me with at least two (2) keys at no cost to me before I ever take the vehicle. Too many are buying used F-150's right now and finding out about the EXPENSIVE 2nd key. Getting the 3rd, 4th, etc. is no problem. But the chips in these keys which provide us with added theft security are costing quite a few folks a pretty penny ... as you've no doubt found out.

This topic has been discussed here many times ... along with the "how to" for programming a 3rd key, etc.

Maybe you could snag a key from here for $20:

As long as the dealership is cool with programing/cutting this key. Maybe you can get it cut at the homedepot and save some there too.

Hope this helps...

If you have two already programmed keys, you can program a third yourself.

In regards to the cost of programming, well, if it makes you feel any better, we at the dealer are pissed about having to buy $2500 PDS kits and $5000 (that's the "base" package...the full blown setup is about $12K) IDS setups to program those keys.

It's not just a truck thing. My 98 Towncar, 01 Escape and 04 F-150 are all the same way. I ordered the blanks from E-bay, had them cut at Walmart (free, they didn't have anything to run through the register) and I programed them myself in about 5 minutes each. If I lose one, I still have 2 and can make another replacment for $10-12 each.

A local locksmith should be able to do this for less money. However, I personally would push the sales manager to waive the cost for programing the new key. I would volunteer to pay the dealership price for the key blank, and work hard to get the dealership to eat the cost for programing. This should not be too hard to do. The actual cost for the dealership is very little, just the tech's time to pull the codes from the truck and program the key.

There was only one key w/ mine too, but my sales guy made sure that I had two keys and fobs before I left, no charge. It was a pta for the guy to do too. He had to hook up a computer to the truck and program a new key since there was only one. But the bonus is now that I have two, if I elect to get a third key cut, I can program it myself. The key fob was much easier. A few quick turns of the key, press a button on the new fob, and voila, two fobs.

I agree with wookie. I would push the sales manager to cover the cost but if that fails I would check with your local locksmith to see what it would cost first before I would pay the dealer that much.
