I have it [switch] on my GMC truck and leave the passenger air bag switched off at all times B/C I'm the only one that drives it to work and back.
But like someone stated earleir, I think their purpose is to switch it off when young ones and/or toddlers are riding shotgun. Great idea!
I like the idea of a manual override to turn off the passenger side airbag. I have experienced over the past two years that the seat sensor is intermittent and i can only image during the time of a crash when a child may put additional pressure in the seat generating a false reading (weight wise) allowing the deployment of the airbag.

remember your computer can sense an impact and how severe it is..
but then again im only grabing at straws... check your manual there should be more info in there about the system
I have the switch in the same place, and it is a passanger side airbag on/off switch. I also have the weight sensors that turns the airbag off automatically. I thought the airbag was broken a few days after I bought the truck, haveing everthing on the seat for work it would turn off and evertime I attempted to take it to the dealer it was working, eventually I figured it out.

All I have is the weight sensor in the seat on my '05. I have pull out cup holders and an ashtray in that circled area.

My XL Regular Cab does have the seat sensor and the deactivation switch. I've had my parents dog in a pet carrier, sitting on the seat and the airbag deactivated automatically.

My wife weighs only about 100 lbs and every time she farts, the air bag deactvates.
