Raced a Hemi Just Now
Sounds like a pretty even match up, which I can believe with all of Josiah's mods. I've raced a few hemi's now, but it is hard for me to tell if they are racing or not since I'm usually out 10-20 truck lengths ahead of them in no time.
I've been wanting to line up with an SRT-10, and finally did the other day. My adrenaline got pumping, and then I realized I had a 16' and a 20' 4X12 on the top of the ladder rack and I was driving my brothers work truck. :o Maybe I will do myself some justice waiting until the 4.56 gears are installed before going up against a regular cab SRT-10 though.

I think what he said sounds totally plausible if you ask me. One thing I have noticed about *my* truck is that if you go from a standstill, even with my upgraded 4.1 gears the truck seems to be suffering from terrible turbo lag...then you hit the top of 1st gear and from there on out it is a rocket ship.
When I race my buddy's Ranger with a 150 progressive wet shot nitrous system with a handful of other mods he flies ahead of me off the line even though he has stock 3.73 gears + 32 inch tires, and then around 45-50MPH I go by him like he's not even moving.
My point is...if you did what Josiah said he did, and started rolling around 30 and then floored it, you would downshift RIGHT into the prime power zone for these trucks and really have a good chance in the race.

No, the engines do not suck. They are built very well and are made for pulling and hauling and to do what a truck is suppose to do.
Ford probably laughs at people trying to race them like sports cars when trucks aren't made to do that. If you wanna fast vehicle, go by a car. Buy a truck for what a truck is suppose to.

Actually based on stock dyno graphs and whatnot, these OHC motors are great HP engines above 3500 rpms. They really are not suited for a truck however due to higher HP/trq rpm range, and are better suited for a lighter sports car. Thats why the Mach 1's and Cobras do so well, because the mod motors are perfect match for the application. However, for towing and where low rpm torque is needed, the OHV pushrod motors are the best IMHO. Both GM and Chrysler still use pushrod engines of similiar size with better HP/Trq numbers such as the Hemi and LS series GM engines.

Redwing, I've certainly heard stranger coincidences and I'm not offended. The 33k offer fell through when the ebay listing was around. You said it beats hemi's, I did not win this run, and the 20mpg has been discussed and reasoned for on many occasions. My eff. gear ratio is something around 2.xx as opposed to 3.73's due to 37" diameter tires, at 55mph I have hit the sweet spot where I am able to maintain my ideal engine load to speed ratio.
bigyellowtruck1, you are spot on with those remarks. Many have no idea regarding the 5.4's performance unless they've tinkered with mods, and intake/tune/exhaust doesn't give you the right to shoot down a dyno slip or a run with the competition either.
05roushmarklt, we have all seen your dyno sheets...you're exempt from opinions here.
You need to update pics of your house in progress with your truck in front. Shoot me an email and maybe we can work something out in photoshop...you need a sig already.
Lumadar, it's obvious you've explored the tranny's mood swings...for 37's it's ideal to hit it at 35 or so but stock I was right @ 30.
Ignore the mountainqueer. Thanks for the comments to the rest of you. And if I didn't reply to you, you're probably not worth the time.
