06 F150 5.4 engine missing/backfiring
I had a similar issue with mine at 1600 miles, they replaced the throttle body, no more problems and I now have 33,500 on it. As far as a copy of the repairs, my dealer gives me a copy even if it is under warranty. It is a regular invoice and it even shows the cost, just no charge to me.

I know your frustration! I had a problem similar to yours about 3 months ago. The truck would fall on its face if i needed to speed up quickly. The first couple thousand miles were without this problem, and just started doing this. I took it to the first dealership 3 TIMES without a fix, then to a 2nd dealership once with the same result. I ended up driving over an hour north to a third dealership only after talking to the service manager for about 30 minutes about the problem. They found 3 bad injectors and a very unhealthy fuel filter (two months later), and this thing drives better now than it ever did. The tech spoke to me after the fix about the other dealers not finding the problem. He decided that I must have bought really bad gas somewhere recently to cause this much fouling. I ended up getting a call from the first dealer offering free oil changes for life...on any Ford vehicle I buy. The take-home message is to try another Ford service department. Good Luck, my friend.
Guys could you imagine if an injector sticks open after the warranty is up?? I couldnt imagine replacing an entire short block along with exhaust components damaged! What brand of fuel injectors is Ford using exactly, Im afraid to find out. If they use such brands as Hankook, then theres no telling what other cheap brands their using.
I guess I'll add fuel injectors to my normal routine maintenance replacement list.

The first was a 1993 4.0 Ranger. Started missing and popping back, only under acceleration, and only occaisonally, somewhere around 120K miles. I replaced the plugs, wires, coil pack, and MAF, no change. However, it would behave for 1 or 2 K after even just pulling the plugs and putting them back in. If it sat unused for a few weeks, same thing. Eventually junked the truck at 220K.
2000 Mustang GT, 95K, now starting to do exactly the same thing. I changed to cooler copper plugs ~60K, otherwise all stock. Is it possible that this is an injector issue? I have heard of Explorers with similar problems. Quinten, your thoughts?

Your Mustang might have an ignition coil breaking down under load. For whatever reason, the injector concern seems to affect mostly '05-'06 5.4 3Vs. In an effort to save a buck from the '04s, Ford changed vendors for their injectors and obviously that was a very bad idea.
Man, this dealership really sounds like they may not know what the issue is man, maybe theyve got some brand new techs and thats why theyre bein so polite, bcuz there is no excuse for them to not be able to isolate the faulty part and also give you a print out of what the part was and the work performed man. This is what it sounds like to me man. Just please dont jump to the conclusion that your truck was a bad decision. These trucks are awesome, Ive got 23,000 miles on mine, have had only 2 issues, which I mean if you drive your vehicle everyday little things are bound to go bad, but the dealership, thankfully, had some good experienced techs and were able to find the faulty part, replace it rather quickly, never cost me a dime, and always got a printout of the work performed. Bottom line, great trucks, tell yer dealership ta get their sh*t tagether n fix yer baby!!!

Here goes: I have an 06 F150 Supercrew 4x4 5.4. When I reached 1762 miles the truck started to miss and back fire when accelerating. Went to dealer and they keep it four days. I picked it up and when leaving dealership(1/2 mile away I noticed the same problem)I accelerated from a stop light and my truck started missing and as the rpm's got higher it started back firing.... NO change from when I took it in. I turned around and took it back. This time they keep my truck five days. I went to pick it up and expressed my concerns... I was told it is fixed, and was told a service adviser actually drove it home and back the next day to ensure there no were NO problems. I left the dealership... and accelerated and @ 2500 rpms the truck started missing(No back firing this time)I continued to drive my truck home and the missing continued. I called the dealership(47 miles from my residence) and explained to them that the truck is better(no back firing) but still misses when accelerating and acutally seems to bog down when I accelerate. I took the truck back(1878 miles) the dealer keep it three days. I was told they changed ALL plugs and Coil packs per FORD TSB. I picked it up... and the same crap!! Still missing under acceleration. I called the dealer back and was told to "run a few tanks of fuel through it" I now have 3342 miles on it and it is still missing under lite acceleration and seems to be bogging down... also my fuel mileage has drop to 12.8 as shown on the digital gauge from a high of 15.1, The odd thing is sometimes the truck will run great! but not for very long maybe a mile or so then back to missing and sluggish. It never runs good consistently. I called the dealer and it is going back Monday 9/4/06. I apologize for being long winded...Any and ALL replies are welcome. PLEASE HELP.
A loyal FORD guy.

A loyal FORD guy.Okay... Now get this!! I went over Saturday to test drive the truck. I pulled out of dealership pressed on the accelerator and "cough, sputter" jerking was noticed... The same symptoms as before. I drove the truck 71 miles and put it through "Normal" driving scenarios and when you applied normal to WOT eight out of ten times it will "Miss/Sputter and sometimes backfire or make a popping sound". I returned to the dealership totally pissed-off. I was transferring some items to my wifes car when this guy{6foot plus, shaved head, small gotee weighing approx. 250lbs and wearing mirrored shades} came up to me and said "Well, what do you think? Runs sweet right?" I looked up and just lost it!! I called him everything but white... I am right now waiting for the dealership to open. This technicaian(the big guy) explained that these new engines CAN NOT run True Duals with a K&N drop-in filter... He said "No Back Pressure" and thats causing the problem... I tried to tell him the truck is still hosed-up but he did not want to hear that. As a matter of fact he "Swore" that the truck runs perfect. I guess I'll end up trading this Brand New truck for another one, BTW is has 3945 mile on it.
*** ANYONE WITH INFORMATION ABOUT WHAT I CAN DO PLEASE RESPOND. I AM PAST THE POINT OF FURSTRATION.... I NEED SOME HELP *****
True dual exhaust causing all your problems? Now I've heard everything.
Sticking injectors and/or burnt up catalytic converters are a well known and documented problem on '05-'06 5.4 3Vs. You desperately need to find another dealer - or, give me a little time, I'll try to dig up some literature for you on the problem.
Dealers like that **** me off, 'cause they make all dealers and their techs look like idiots. I'm willing to bet that you've got a plugged up converter, caused by an intermittently sticking injector. Left unchecked, this will eventually cause catastrophic damage to the engine.

Hi,
I've got a 99 lightning with 70,000mi. It just started doing that today! It has a boost gauge, and it only happens when the boost is over 2-3psi. It startes to bog down, and miss, and if I push the boost up to 5-6 it will backfire. This happens at 1500 rpm or 4500 rpm. It's not a function of rpm, just boost. I'm thinking it's a MAP sensor, but the boost gauge works fine. (It even spikes when it backfires, I don't want to see that again!) Maybe this could get the techs on the right track. If you find out anthing I'd like to know.

Just an FYI, I ordered from AutoPartsWarehouse and they sent the wrong parts and were a real PITA to deal with, plus the parts were real cheap, get what you pay for. After a lengthy return I ordered from Ford-Parts.com, got the right parts (yes, you have to give them your VIN) and they were FoMoCo.
Anyway, the coils on plug were the problem, and the vehicle now runs much better. This also fixed the infamous 1 - 2 shift lag that the GTs are known for. Thanks Quintin!
