stolen tailgate and ebay

My dads tailgate was stolen just recently. He has a white f150. I find it pretty amazing the past few weeks the number of white tailgates on ebay.

Seems kinds fishy to me.

I mean if you took the tailgate off your truck for any reason wouldnt you want to keep it just in case you trade the truck?

Well if your dads ONE tailgate was stolen, how would that equate to a number of tailgates being listed? These trucks get totaled everyday. The parts that are in good condition get salvaged and sold to parts yards and on ebay.
Now if I noticed a white tailgate for sale in your area, then I would become suspicious.

When my dads got stolen I checked about 50 junk yards and not one could get me a tailgate.

But when I checked ebay there was a bunch of white tailgates. There are 2 or 3 up there right now.

Just seems strange. And I would have checked for ones listed in my dads area but he didnt tell me about it for about a week.

You can check ebay for ended listings that may have been in you area.

I rarely do. However I have started to lock mine now.

It costs over 450 dollars for a new one! Thats a good chunk of change that could be spent elsewhere. And what really sucks is without a tailgate the bed is allmost useless.

The power tailgate lock may, indeed, be a good investment! $450 is harsh!

A hose clamp or a large HVAC tie wrap around the passenger side hinge can help make the tailgate more difficult to steal, yet still be removeable.

Just FYI almost all the tailgates on eBay are from wrecking yards. Look at the vendor sites and WebPages.

Most wrecking yards 'cherry pick' parts to go on eBay. Guys like BreadmanJr who sells a megaton of f150 parts works with a bunch of yards, getting interior parts to sell. Locally there are ten wrecking yards. All the 'good stuff' goes on e-bay. EBay pays better than the local shmuck.
Just needed a couple of Neon heads and my buddy went to thirty pick a parts in the LA basin. All were picked clean of heads. On eBay there were plenty, selling cheap.

The biggest guy selling them goes to all the Southern California yards, gets a bulk price and pulls the heads. Sells about one a day.
It's just the way the market works now.
Chris

I installed a power tailgate lock in mine. Sure helps as I always forgotten to lock the damn thing. Now everytime I lock my doors it locks too. For about $15 and a cpl hours tinkering well worth it!

Are the tailgate locks keyed the same as the door lock? I always thought anybody with an F150 could pop their key in and unlock it, it just doesn't feel like is as solid as the door lock.

I always keep mine locked, but I am going to (one of these days) install a tailgate autolock and the tail gate assist thing (I will need one more thing as well, I know what it is but can't think of it right now). When I push the trunk button on my alarm, I want it to unlock and lower my tailgate. I can't stand the fact that one of the buttons on my alarm remote doesn't get used, I need to put it to work too!!!
