Edge questions and observations-after install

I got my Edge last Thursday and had it installed in about 20 minutes (took a while to decide whether or not to mount the pod since I plan to paint it, only took about 5 minutes to run the cable and get it programmed). I have a couple of questions that maybe someone here has experience with already.

I noticed in the manual it says something about having the ability to set the octane level in the program which is supposed to give a slight change to the fuel curve (if I read that part correctly). Where is that? I have yet to find in the options. Is it only available if you're running level 3? I'm currently on level 2 and plan to run 3-4 tanks of gas to get a good idea of how it's changed anything.

What are you guys getting for AMPG? Granted I only have about 100 miles on the truck since I put the Edge on, but mine was showing almost 31mpg when I pulled into work this morning. How accurate is yours compared to figuring it out manually? I'll get a better idea once I fill the truck again as I've been keeping track of my mileage since the truck had about 1000 miles on it. I have noticed one thing though that may attribute to such a high number: With the IMPG on the display I have a tendency to not accelerate quite so fast because I can see how low the mpg's go when taking off. I will still get on it from time to time, but for the most part I try to take it easy without driving too slow.

This is purely a personal preference/aesthetics question. What parameters do you have on your display? What do you find to be the most useful to keep an eye on? What color is yours set to? I had to play with the color a little just to tone it down a bit because it was so bright at night. I haven't decided yet what color I want to run it at on a regular basis.

Overall, I'm very pleased with this purchase.

Average MPG is off, there is an update that fixes it.

They switched the octane setting to the timing setting. I'd update yours, sounds like you have an old program. I have mine set for RPMs, MPH, ECT, and TFT.

I updated mine before I installed it. Put it in about 10 days ago. Was not too impressed with level 2 and went to level 3. First tank of 93, I averaged 16.5 mpg. Thats with 3 or 4 WOT, and I do not drive it real easy. I have read that you get better mileage if you do not ease up to speed. That if you take off fairly quickly, get up to your driving speed quicker, it actually takes less fuel. Have no idea as to the validity of it, but I drive that way, so i like the sound of it. I like the green display as it goes with my XLT guages. I have the digital speed (great, since the steering wheel blocks my speedometer), engine temp, accelerating mpg and average mpg. I am enjoying the Edge monitor, that is the main reason I bought it.

In my experience, you don't get better mileage driving that way, the Edge just shows that you do. The AMPG on these things, IMO, is basically useless. During city driving, the AMPG will show consistently higher than your actual mileage. It's the exact opposite for highway. Using old school, manual calculations, my average is around 17.5-18 MPG (70% highway, 30% city), but my Edge rarely shows above 16. Most of the time, because of a certain spot I get stuck at idling for a bit, it shows 14 MPG. I've had it drop as low as 12 once, but still calculated 17+ based on miles traveled and fuel used. On the other hand, using the goose it and drift driving method, I can make the AMPG climb as high as 18 during city driving. At the same time though, you can literally see the fuel guage dropping.

They made a strong effort with their calculations, but unless you monitor fuel consumption and compare to miles traveled, MPG will always be a guessing game.

BTW - My display shows IMPG, ECT, TFT, and MPH.

I was not saying that Edge was espousing that, I read it in an automotive journal. They had reasearch to back up their claim. They were saying it took more gas to ease up to 50 miles per hour as you stayed in low and second too long. Again, I do not know if there is any validity to it, but someone did some tests and wrote an article.

That's odd, cuz I've always read the opposite. The old "2000 RPM Rule" comes to mind. Always strive to keep your RPM at or below 2000 for the best fuel efficiency.

Who knows which style of thinking is correct. All I know is my best MPG is achieved when I drive "normal". Not a drag race, but not a funeral either.

BTW - Does anyone know when the last Edge update was released? Just wondering if I need to update mine.

I am about 99% sure that both the Ford computer and the Edge unit do not figure WOT driving in on the average MPG.

I do not go by the computer, I use miles driven divided by gallons consumed.

I guess I am just stupid. I cannot find the TFT setting. I ran the lighting software and it said what was available was version 6 and what I had was version 6. I also have noticed that the manual says 14 PID's are available, but only lists 11 PID's. What am I missing!

TFT may not be one of the available PIDS for the 97-03 F150.

I have a question on the Edge Evo, on my display the left side seems a little darker than the right. Also with some red added like it comes OEM I have a light red hugh on the right side. Almost like it has a bulb in it and you can see where the bulb is at, Any one else have this or is this a problem with mine?
