Help !!! Im changing pads and I'm stuck

Ok, got the wheel off, 18mm caliper bolts out. But the stupid caliper wont come off. It moves a fraction of an inch but wont slide off rotor. There is a Lip worn down into the rotor that I think is keeping the caliper from backing off. Its on the outside edge of the rotor and doent look like its ever been touched by a brake pad.

HELP !!!

Did you push the cylnder or piston back in? If you did, it should come off even if there is a lip.

You have to. the piston is what pushes against the pads to engage them. I use a C-clamp. Or you can use a rod or blust screw driver. If using something sharp, you need to insulate the tip so it won't chip off part of the piston. You also need to open your master cylender before pushing on the piston, as the fluid level will rise as you push on the piston. You push it back till the center is about even with its cylinder and then the calper just slides off.

the caliper holds the pads, on the back side of the rear pad, there is a round thing about 2 inches across that looks like it is in a rubber sleeve. That round thing is the piston that the fluid causesto push the pads against the rotor. The pressure on that piston, the round thing has to be eliminated by pushing the piston back inside its sleeve.

Guys - Y'all are giving instructions for how to compress a piston once the caliper is off the rotor. He can't get it off the rotor.

ccla - When you say 18mm bolt, do you mean 18mm head size? If so, you pulled the wrong bolts. Sounds like you pulled the bolts for the caliper support bracket.

The two you're shooting for should have a 12mm (I think) head size. Once you pull them, the caliper will side off with the pads still in place. Then the lip won't matter.

actually what I posted is a step by step from the beginning...while it is not specific to the F-150 changing pads are generally the same.

Good luck with it.

Ahhh, good point. I saw the 18 and thought that it was an 11 or 12, but then went on. But, I usually have to compress the piston to get the caliper to slide off.
