I think they tried it with an old crown vic that they got cheap from a poilce auction. They were trying to prove that if a cable was wrapped around an axle that the force would rip the axle out from underneath, like in American Graffiti and Gone in 60 seconds.

Or is the myth im thinking of and the ones yall are talking about 2 differnt ones?
Different myth but similar if not same car. The one you're thinking of they tied a cable around a poll and to the rear axle of the car to see if it would rip the rear end off. The myth about the driveshaft I think they used remote control to drive the car and to drop the driveshaft at exactly the right time.

When I was 16 I was on the way home from working at a gas station. An older model chevy was in the number 2 lane and blocking traffic.

I pulled in behind and saw that the front of the drive shaft was buried in the asphalt. The rear was still attached to the rear end.

When the cops got there I told them I could disconnect the u joints and we could back it out.

After getting the shaft disconnected, we pushed the car backwards until it cleared the shaft and we were able to get the car to the side of the road. The shaft was sticking out at an angle from the pavement. A tow truck hooked up to it and pulled it out of the pavement.

I could see how a taller vehicle could get flipped if the shaft was shorter and the vehicle higher.
