Problem: Engine Tick/Clank/Delay at WOT (5.4 3v)
Hi all-
I've got a 2005 5.4 and I noticed that ever since I loaded my custom tunes (xcal2) when I go from a stop (no throttle) and go straight into WOT (Like at a drag strip) the engine makes a metal clanking sound that is audible inside the cab, and especially outside the truck.
It does it on the 87 octane and 91 octane, before and after learning cycles.
The only other thing I can thing of that might be related is that since day one the truck has made a somewhat similar sound occasionally when it turns over, AND every now and then the truck won't turn over and I have to crank it twice.
ANY ideas on what this might be?

I have a similar noise. It comes from under my feet, sounds like metal pinging noise, but it's not the engine i'm pretty sure

Youre not alone. I have a troyer tuned xcal2 with the same issue, DETONATION from a stand still when you stab the throttle. The wierd part is that it only does it when the engine isnt under load, just for that quick second before the gear engages. Ive been meaning to talk to troyer about it but havent had the chance, anyone elses input would be appriciated
Id also like to add that I have played with timing a bit to no avail... just poor performance. Hell, it will even do it on an 87 tune with 92 in the tank!

A 2005 engine should have PZT-1FE plugs in it as well, although some early builds may have slipped through the cracks with the 2FEs which are slightly hotter than what Ford recommends now as a service plug. This may promote some of your detonation that you're experiencing. It's a reach, but it's all I can think of right now. Might wanna give Troyer a buzz and see what he says too.

Can I go in with the xcal2 and adjust the timing without having to re-install the tune?
My truck is doing the same thing. I have an edge on level two with timing increased to 1.25 running 87 Octane. I will decrease the timing tommorrow and see if that changes anything. Do you have to remove the plugs to see what type you have?

Mine was a January 05' build and it had the PZT2F's in it, I had spark knocking problems exactly like this on my stock Xcal tune for both 87 and 93 tunes. If your Xcal is setup right, you can go to options right before you flash the tune to the truck and adjust spark trim from low RPM to high RPM in like 3 different segments. I would take 2 degrees out of the low RPM timing to be safe. I would also get these new PZT1F plugs. Roush sent me these when they updated my PCM but now I wonder if I should go with Autolite HT0's for an even colder heat range........
