Need some help with a lift

ALright I just got back from an offroad shop. I was originally just going to get 33 inch mud grapplers and use my stock 18 in wheels. By the way I have a 05 FX4. But then I got to thinking maybe I should just go all out and get the Fabtech 6 inch lift.

So I think I am going to get the 6 inch lift but I have a few questions and I am hoping that some guys here with lifts can help me out.

First Should I get new wheels or can I use the stock 18 in ones? The store said I could go either way. If i need new wheels will any 17 in ones fit? I liked the motometal 950 or 951 but they said they might not fit in a 17 in because of the brakes? I want to go with 17's because they are cheaper.

Also do I need to regear because of running the 35 in tires??? Will I lose alot of power if I dont. I tow a trailor with some fourwheelers pretty often and I dont want my towing ability to be reduced.

Thanks alot for the help.

There are cheaper lifts than fabtech id you are on a budget. Also I would get new wheels. I am not sure about 17s but I bought my 18s for about $900 if that helps. I would also try for 35s if you can afford it and not 33s. And you also dont have to regear. but make sure you get a tuner like the edge, it will help out A LOT

I doubt you'll be able to keep it around $4000. How much did the place quote you for the Fabtech 6" kit installed?

lift quote

for my truck, it cost me around $6,000

6" procomp
35" BFG AT and new 17" rims
Warn winch 9.5 XP
transformer kit
install

I would say around $4000 without the winch and the kit.

well if there is a 4 wheel parts around you they always have deals. I read on here that you can get a procomp w/ coilovers for 2 g's. I also know they have awesome wheel and tires packages. They might be able to hook you up for 4g's. Give them a call and tell them what you want and how much you are willing to spend. They will work something out for ya.

I got mine for $4500, but that's with Dirt Logics and Fox w/ reservoirs. Everything else the same...Fabtech 6", 951 (18x9), 35" Xterrains.

My re-gear (front & rear) 4:56's for $1200.

I am really leaning towards the fabtech 6 in kit. I am putting all this money into it so I mine as well do it right. I dont want to half *** it then regret it later.

Do you think that I can install the kit myself? How long would it take me with a few friends? I can follow directions and my friends a mechanic. If I could save $1000 that would be great but I just want to make sure its done the right way. My neighbor also owns a tire repair shop so I can probably mount and ballance the tires with him for free. The only thing I would need is to get an alighnment when I am finished. Maybe I will look into installing it myself what do you guys think??

I got my Fabtech 6" lift, rims and tires for around $3650 from 4 wheel parts. It took me and two friends 8 hours one day and just myself about 3 the next day finishing eveything up. Two of us know a good bit about working on trucks and the third is a good mechanic who can pick up on things quickly (thats why we work on nuclear reactors on submarines). We also had a lift to use and all the tools (perks of being in the Navy). There are other people who have done it and some have had problems. Your best bet is print the instructions for the lift kit from the fabtech website and let your mechanic friend look over them to see how hard he think it is and go from there.

Go for it dude, it's cake.

lol bry. Seriously though, I'd do it again in a heartbeat. I used hand tools and it took me about 16-18 hours or so. It's work and if you're on a budget, a lift is a little risky. If something gets damaged, you're probably out a ride. If you're pretty confident with your skills go for it, let me know when you start it and I'll make sure I check the forums often that day so I can try to help with any issues that arise. You have others here who will help as well, God knows they helped with my problems. There are a lot of problems I had to use my head to get around, and some other issues that you might have to work around (i.e. brakelines too short, etc). If you're going to wheel with it, do it yourself bud, I'm pretty confident I can fix a lot of things that might happen on the trail so I can at least limp it home. If not, I made a good friend christmas eve (I think it was), helped get his tow truck unstuck. I went through countless problems and other retarded drama (what was up with the bearings), but I say bring'em on, I'll only learn more about the truck...and floor jacks
