Dumped Exhaust vs. Exit

Have any of you experienced any problems with having exhaust dumped as opposed to a rear exit?

I had a GMC with dumped 40 series (Flows), and it was just too loud for my taste. I had a Gibson on my last GMC, rear exit, and the damn thing had problems with staying in the hangers and it rattled.

Now, I have a 4.6 Supercab, and I just want to free my engine up a little for more efficiency, lower exhaust temp, and some mid range grunt. I am tempted to go to a muffler shop and tell them to hook me up with a new muffler dumped, my budget being my major reason.

Opinions much appreciated.

Dumps will probally give you the same problem with the 150, they are louder, and in my opinion don't look as good.

I've had dumps and now have it exited out the rear corners... the dumps were not louder. It deepens the tone a bit, as the sound is bouncing off the ground and your truck, but definitely not louder on the outside. A little bit louder in the cab for obvious reasons though.

First off if your budget allows you to dump it and not run it out the back then I would dump it. I have mine going out the back at the moment and I wish I would have dumped it. Partly b/c I am lazy and don't like cleaning my tips. Plus the 40 series I have really doesn't give me the sound I would like to have.

You must be older and also did your truck ever get fixed?

Given that a dumped exhaust system would have less pipe to travel, don't you guys think that the engine would have less backpressure with a dumped system?

If so, this would likely hurt bottom end torque, right?

I am totally baffled after reading some threads on the "exhaust" area of this forum.

It sounds to me like a muffler dumped would have less backpressure than a new muffler and long pipes. From my previous knowledge, "backpressure" has always been a bad word as far as efficiency and performance. The engine does not have to work as hard, the burnt gas escapes easier, and presto- you should see freed up horsepower (and torque?) and a cooler running engine (lower exhaust temp), which all would result in a more efficient machine.

Opinions on my rationale...am I totally off?

yeah they fixed it but it is back over there because the fuel pump failed, apparently they put the 35 gallon or whatever it is instead of my 27 gallon but did not use the correct fuel pump, they used my original 27 gallon fuel pump
now i have to fight them to replace it

No you're exactly right you will lose low end torque for sure. And why would you not want to see tips on a truck?

i recently added a flowmaster 40 series to my truck. I wanted it dumped, but i travel alot and the guy said there would be a lot of drone, i dont know about yall but there is nothing more annoying than riding in a truck for 4 hours and all you hear is brrrrrrrrrrrrr. So basically he cut off my factory and just put the 40 in its place and re used the factory pipe. With tax it cost me $126 bucks, not bad at all. Since youre on a budget thats the route i would take. Its not really really loud, but it gets the job done, with the radio at about average volume you can hear it.

Jwool,

Have you noticed a difference in torque/hp on the low end and/or high end?

I really don't care all that much about sound if I do not see at least SOME gains in hp/torque somewhere in the curve, coupled with some efficiency and lower exhaust temps.

I am in the exact same boat as you Jwool, I travel quite a bit, so any drone would likely drive me insane.

Did you get a new tip or did you just keep the stocker?
