Black Ford 20" Rims

I got my 2006 King Ranch 20" Wheels back from powder coating today. Just wanted to post a few pictures for you guys to check out. I also placed an order today for a set of 33x13.50R20 Interco Irok Radials. I really wanted toyos MT's. But I couldn't find a set. I really wanted a mud tire... There really weren't too many other options. It was basicly the Nitto or the Irok and The Irok was cheaper, so i decided to give it a shot.

I still have to figure out what to do with the center caps. any ideas?

Ill post pictures Next week when I get the tires in.

outstanding man... those things look SHARP... and by the way... when you find out what or who to do the center caps let me know.. I did the same thing to a set of expedition wheels for my 150 and a year or so later still have the silver plastic center caps lying around waiting... are they something you can take to a body shop to paint??? anyway... they look great man... and you'll get a lot of double takes and comments... one thing I'll add though... MAKE SURE that you remove the powercoat from the inside rim of the wheel.. where the wheel comes in contact with the hub.. TRUST ME if you don't it'll be tough to get them on and damned near impossible to get them off... it took a sledge hammer and 4 guys to get mine off after the tire shop used their impact tools to suck the rims down on the hubs after they wouldn't slip on... nice toes by the way LOL

Wow! Those look great. Where did you get them done and what did it cost you for the powdercoating?

How durable will the powercoating be when they're putting your tires on? I guess what I'm asking is how easily would something like that scratch?

I was actually going to point out it is time to do laundry ( 1st pic ).

Those wheels turned out sharp. I will take a look again at the Lightning meet in DE, to see what the owner did to his black wheels for the center cap.

The thing I don't know is when you sand down the center cap, how far will it need to go to break the chrome finish, vs leaving enough material behind to make the lug nut cap sturdy enough to put on and off. ?

Yeahh.... I guess I shold have picked a better backdrop for the picture huh?

The powdercoating was $60 a rim after tax for all 4 was $258.

It was done by Tallahassee Powder Coating. Powdercoating shops are often associated with welding shops. So if you are looking for a place you could try looking up some welding shops. The place I took them to did a decent amount of motorcycle stuff and catomotive stuff....but most of thier business is fences and ironwork. In south FL where I used to live there were alot of powdercoating places that specialized in marine work. But almost all of them do the fences and stuff... So i thinks wheels are usually a piece of cake for them.

They told me to make sure they used the rubber "boot" on the mounting machine. Based on past experience with powdercoated parts it should hold up fine as long as they are careful. The downside of powdercoating is that if you do scuff a rim the metal will show through so it will be more noticeable than say if you skuff a polished or forged rim. That is just the price you pay for the all black look.

The DE lightning meet, those were aftermarket wheels ( 20"s ) and they came with black center caps. No new info, maybe get a donor center cap from teh junk yard and do a test with it ? Without digging into the chrome finish on the cap, there is no indication of how far you wil have to get to a base for the primer. Maybe a build up on the back side with fiberglass and mat ?
My only concern ( which maybe un warrented ) is that the cap will be too think after sanding the chrome, that it will a) flex too much when taking it off, even with parimer , color and clear with flex added, it will crap the paint or b) it will snap when you take it off ??

Just some random thoughts on the topic.

Good luck, let us know what you come up with.

I don't know that much about painting plastic parts, But is it totally necessary to get all the chrome off? Couldn't you just rough it up and paint over it? I was also thinking about using the caps off of my stock FX4 rims. They are the same size, but I am not sure how they would look with the design of the 20" wheel. I also think that there is a diffrent center cap on the 20" wheels when they come on the FX4 or the Lariat.

Josiah I don't have a KR... But you will be able to see the Iroks mounted on my black KR rims on my Black FX4 sometime next week!

I don't care for black rims but it looks like they did a good job on them. Your FX4 cap would work, will you paint them black then?

Hurry up and get those pics! I want to see the smoked lights, I do miss them...
