New guy here with some questions

Hey guys I'm a new guy currently serving over in Iraq. Me and the wife will be starting a family as soon as I get back so I need to get rid of my Wrangler and get a better family vehicle. Military personnel are able to order directly through Ford at a "discount". Just wanted to get an opinion on what you guys thought of this discount. The vehicle I'm looking at is a '06 FX4 Screw with the short box. It has every available option on it minus the dvd player since I opted for the sunroof. The price I was quoted was $34,000. That is including the extended warranty. If I drop the extended warranty it will knock another $1700 of the price. It is going to be built for me and delivered to my dealer of choice. So what do ya'll think?

My next question. What is the difference between the FX4 and XLT. I know the FX4 has the rancho shocks, colored bumpers, and skid plates is there anything else different. Does the FX4 have a lift from the factory or is it the same as the XLT.

Hey I appreciate all the help.

Howdy Wes,

If you're talking about the Overseas Military Sales Program, I say go for it. I bought a brand new Harley through the program two years ago and saved quite a bit of money.

I'm biased towards the FX4 because I own one, it's the more expensive truck, but theoretically you would be saving more money through the program.
On the other hand, you mentioned starting a family and would be wise to save every penny.
It's your choice...think about it carefully.

Make sure you have a few thousand saved up at time of delivery. You'll need it for TTL.

-Thanks for your service

Make sure the extended warrenty is thru FordMoCo...I bought a Ranger while I was in Bahrain in '95 and the extended warrenty was thru another company...found out when I got to Maryland that the dealer would not honor that warrenty...I would have to pay for repairs and then claim it thru the warrenty company...I can't remember what the companies name was, but the number I called was a NY number..

Anyway, just FYI..

Take care,
Craig

I've got an '04 XLT Screw, with the fold down console in the front, and I love it. I can seat 6 people. My 18month old rides in the back in his seat, and we've driven it from Florida to Cape Cod and back. I use one of those portable DVDs that you strap the monitor on the back of the seat headrest. It's better than having the DVD on the roof since it's closer to the kid, and you can bring it in when you get to where you are staying. And trust me you want the DVD in the truck with a little kid.

Thanks for your service! The rest of you guys too, I appreciate it.

I ordered my 06 FX4 through the Military Auto Sales while I was in Afganistan. They did a great job as far as coustmer service and they do save you some money. Like TexasFatboy, I'm biased towards the FX4.

The FX4 trim level is the painted bumpers, body colored grille surround, bar style black grille, skid plates, the painted 18" wheels, FX4 decals, offroad suspension tuning, FX4 gauge cluster, and carbon fiber looking dash. You also get the fog lights standard and most have the two tone paint.

Can't wait to see pics of what you get. Come home safe.

Yeah, I'm talking about the overseas military program. Guess I'm going to go ahead with the purchase. Not too worried about pinching pennies, since both me and my wife have been over here for a 1 yr tour saving our tax free deployment money. So we are both treating ourselves to a nice vehicle. I'm going with the FX4 shes getting the Dodge Charger SRT-8. Thanks

Yeah the warranty is through Ford. It's on the quote from ford. Do Ya'll even think the extended warranty is worth it. Especially since I plan on lifting it. Won't that void the warranty anyway. I know on my Mustang as soon as I changed the gears Ford voided my warranty.

I wanted the fx4 screw but couldnt afford it and got the xlt, there is a big difference in the interior and the exterior go for the fx4.

The ext. warranty is a gamble that you take that you will need it. The company selling it gambles that you want use it. The $1700 price sounds kinda high. You can get the warranty anytime while you are still under the factory warranty (I was told).

Thats another thing if something voids your warranty you want get any of your money back on the extended warranty.

Good for you....The FX4 has a certain "coolness factor" that I couldn’t get over.
If anybody deserves a new truck....it's you. Again, thanks for your service.

You’re pretty much getting it for cost. Keep us updated

The only difference in the suspension is the Rancho shocks on the FX4 which IMO isn't really a "difference".

Another thing you may want to consider between XLT and FX4 is the seating arrangment on the inside. The FX4 has a "flow through" center console and captains chairs; the center console connects to the instrument panel and the gear shift lever is there, so it only has seating for 5 people. You can get the XLT with captains chairs, but the console does not connect to the instrument panel and the gear shift lever will be on the steering column. BUT, you can also get a 40/20/40 front seat in the XLT so you can seat a 6th person in the front seat. Just something I thought may be important to you since you may have a few munchkins in there .

Whats up Wes?

I just got back myself a few weeks ago, ended up with an XLT SCrew. I'm happy with it, but I don't plan on off roading. This pickup is more for utility purposes than fun, but the FX4's are very nice. I'd say spring for it, you'll never see 34k for a loaded FX4 here in the states.
