4.6 vs 5.4 milage
My new 06 screw 5.4 373 18" tires 150" wb got 13.5 on its first tank and 14.5 on the 2nd with some light towing around town and highway mix.Very similar results to my 04 5.4 355 17" supercab 144wb.All figures are Canadian as our gallon is larger.I tried out the 4.6 with 373 and it was a dog as I tow alot.Final observations is they are al pigs on fuel
Just made a round trip from Houston, Tx to Columbus, Ga.
'04, XLT, Scab, 4x2, 5.4L, 3.55 gears, stock tires/wheels and 42000 miles.
763 miles each way.
Outbound got 18.52mpg with speed control set at 80mph though Louisiana, Mississippi, and Alabama. Return trip towing a Honda Acccord on a car dolly (3715 total weight) I got 19 mpg going 65mph.
Very reasonable gas mileage and I didn't even notice power loss due to the car that I was towing. In fact I left overdrive on and used cruise control.
My opinion - opt for the 5.4L and know that you can get good gas mileage and power in the same package.

I was getting terrible mileage with my 06 Lariet scab 5.4 w/3.55, 18" wheels 2wd, 12-14mph on mixed driving. This last weekend w/2500 mi. on the clock I got 19mpg on a 300 mi trip. The only difference from my previous drives was the outside temp. 65-70. I hope the mpg wasn't a fluke.
