ok, I have a 4.6L and it is fine for what i use it for. The most that i ever tow with it is a small fishing boat. it is not like I would ever consider latching on to a large load of hay or something with it. Thats what the F250 is for. My F150 gets about 19 to 20 on the hwy and 16 or so on the back roads. It all depends on how you drive. if you rare and tare with it the less you will get. Just make sure to get the engine that fits your needs. Take everything you read in here with a grain of salt!

Sence 1987 I have owned the 87,89,90,92,95,2 each 97's, 99,00,01 and now a 05 sc 8' bed 8200GVW. Before I bought all these new off the lot vehicles I have owned more than a few ford F-100, 150's, and F-250's.

I have had the 300/6, 4.2/6, 302, 351, 4.6, and of course now the 5.4. I believe I can give a trew answer to this question.

To let you know how I drive, currently I bought my 05 model on April 28, 05(currently 38000 miles). I waited probably one month before I drove it regularly. I own a Electrical contracting company that services offshore oil rigs and just plain ole put up tons of milage.

I drive 80% of the time highway and only cruise control. No I don't drive the speed limit, but I only push it by a couple miles an hour. Grant it I do carry plenty of tools and supplies with me but did in all these trucks, so everything is very, very close to the same.

Truth is..............15mpg boys. I have driven all of them on well over 1000 mile runs a/c on, a/c off and in many different ways. But among all, I drove them al the same way.

I kept a sc 6' bed 3.55 gears for eight years, by far the best of all these trucks. I put a K&N replacement filter in it, power tower, and replaced the cat converter to some type of better one (not sure the name , been many years but I will look it up) on this truck....21mpg no matter what I do.

This is the truth 300, 4.2,4,6 and 5.4. I did find the 3.55 gears were the best, also 3.73 was the worst. Infact I had 3.73 gears with a 4.6 and if I took it out of overdrive and put it in drive on the highway I actually got better gas milage. 3.55 gears went into yhat truck and yes 2.2 mpg better.

I only read the first two post and just couldn't stand what I was hearing.

Sorry if I flamed anyone, but this is really a life time of running fords that gave me these answers.

How I got my mpg, fill the tank and devide it by the milage.

My '05Screw Lariat 5.4 with 3.55 gears gets between 17 to 20 on the highway, depending on road conditions and direction of wind (serious). In a calm wind, I usually get 18-19mpg measured by the onboard computer and about 19-20 by hand method.

When it comes to a truck, the aerodynamic drag is so large than most gasoline engines similar in configuration will get about the same fuel economy.

Serious post

Just came back from a 380-mile trip on I-81, PA to upstate NY.

2005 XLT Scab, 4.6 engine. 20.2 mpg.

I have a hard tonneau cover (AES)? and I think that helps a lot. Averaged 70-75 the whole way.
