potential trans problem

I recently installed an autometer trans temp gauge with the sending unit in the test port. It hasn't seemed to work right from 1st install. The other day the gauge was going from 100 to 250 indicating a short in the sender wire. Well it was cold so I pulled the fuse until the weather warmed a bit. Yesterday I got under the truck and checked all the wiring, verified the operation of the gauge and all was good. I figured I had a bad sending unit, so I pulled it out of the tranny to bench test it. Well when I got it out I noticed that the center section that covers the resistor had broken loose and is now floating in the tranny. My question is, what path the fluid takes from the test port and do you think the part will work its way to the pan and not block anything and cause fluid flow problems? Any thoughts will be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

If it floats, it might get pulled up against one of the small ports in the valve body of the trans......I would drop the pan and find it, and while in there, change your filter and put in some fresh fluid.

Did you use the sending unit that came with the gauge or did you order part# 2259? The sending units that come with the autometer trans temp gauges are to long for that test port. It may have gotten damaged during the install. I had to order sending unit part # 2259 for the reason above and mine seems to be working fine.

Yes, I used the 2258 sender. It seemed to thead in without botteming out. I did put a small probe in the port 1st to check depth, it was close but seemed to have just enough depth. I guess not.
