Wrong gears!!!!!!!

When I picked out my truck, I CAREFULLY searched through local dealer inventories online and picked out my XLT with exactly the options / equipment I wanted. I called the dealership, told them to get it ready and went and picked it up.

After many $$$ worth of mods, I discovered that I had overlooked the axle ratios in my quest for perfect ride. This truck has 3.55's!!! Not exactly what I'd call a performance ratio.

Here's the question - what's it going to take to replace them with 4.10's or something fun like that? Since it's a 4x4 I know there are two sets of gears to deal with. I'm pretty handy, but a mod like this is more than I want to tackle. Any idea of what it's going to cost me?

Thanks, folks!

BTW - I finally got around to posting a little gallery, so if anyone is interested in looking at my truck, help yourself!

I'd say around $1500.

I'm going to have to bite the bullit and do it. the 3.55's just don't have enough pull for my tastes. Thanks for the info.

Do you plan on adding any bigger tires?

I've heard of them being as low as $1100 installed. There are Ring & Pinion assembly kits you can buy. If you don't use 4wd you can get it for a little less than half that price.

I do want to go bigger on tires, but not a lot - maybe 33's. I removed the factory lift blocks in the rear to level it, so I can't go to big.

I'll wait for all the guff over lowering a 4x4. I like it that way. I do need the 4x4 here in Colorado. It's snowing now!

i want to gets some gears as well. especially since I have bigger tires. the 4x4 gears are expensive. The labor is most of it too. it pisses me off too because I saw them put some gears in a truck on i think Trucks! on SpikeTV and it didnt look that hard but when youre dealing with the differentials Id rather pay a professional to do it.

I just replaced my 3.55 setup with 4.10. Here in Las Vegas it ran me $1050 for parts and labor.

Between the gear swap and the Edge programmer, I now love the way the truck runs.

Can't tell from your profile, is your truck two or four wheel drive? 1050 is either about right or way high depending.

Doing a gear swap is pretty touchy, I believe some special tools are needed to set backlash properly. If you want to do it yourself thats awesome- but I would do some research on what exactly is involved, otherwise you might end up with a whine/clunk or who knows what else.
