Outside air temperature

Does anyone else have a problem with their outside air temperature updating too slowly? It is annoying for me that it takes 30 minutes to read the right temperature. When I leave work it is usually 30 degrees warmer than that morning when I got to work. On the way home, the temperature indicatin slowly climbs but really doesn't read right until just before I get home. I have complained to the dealer twice and have been told the indication updates one degree per mile if moving and one degree per 20 minutes if sitting still. I agree that you don't want it bouncing around but I have never seen a vehicle that is that slow to respond. Has anyone else had this problem and been able to get it fixed?

That is b.s. because my truck reads the right temp within a few seconds. Leaving it parked in the sun here will make it read like 30 degrees high. Before I even get out of my neighborhood it is on the right temp. What kind of idiot would think that the thermometer is tied to the odometer.

Mine usually reads hotter than it is outside, but I'm pretty sure my display moves much faster than one degree per mile. Mine usually reads the correct temp. in a matter of minutes.

Mine usually takes only about 10 second after coming out of my garage to adjust to the outside temp, but never any longer than maybe 1/2 a minute.

As I remember there is an update for that,On the early 04 models it was an issue,It has been corrected for the newer models.Maybe call the dealership and check on it-The hard part is going to be finding somebody at the dealership that will try to find out.Good luck.

Mine has a mind of it's own, I barely pay attention to it anymore. It will be 60 out and it will read correct for a little while then dive down to indicate that it's 25 degrees out. It's up and down. Is it time for a new sensor?

The air temp on your cluster comes from the MAF sensor. Since the engine already needs this info to claibrate itself it's just a simple CAN signal to to the cluster.

If you air temp is not correct within minutes you may have a more serious problem.

It's behind the grill, just below the hood latch.

It is a T.S.B. The dealership will fix it for free.

outside air temp

Do you happen to know the TSB number? The first time I took it in, they replaced the sensor, even though I told them that was not the problem. This time they are trying to tell me this is the way it is programmed to work. I told them that would be stupid to retard the response that much. I questioned them about going ahead and doing a reflash but they are insisting nothing is wrong.

So far the new truck is doing fine. My old 2000 would take a minute or two after I started it up to go down on a hot summer day after sitting in the hot sun all day. As it would read 117 or higher at times when it was only 95 or so and it would take a couple of minutes to go down to the correct temp.

Uhh....no it doesn't That would be the IAT sensor that is built into the MAF and that is not what you see in your cluster. The temp sensor for the outside air is located just below the hood latch (not the release) on the vertical radiator support. It looks like a little black nipple. My sensor updates immidietelly. It is VERY simple how that system works, it is just a 2 wire sensor, with a thermo resistor that changes resistance across the 2 pins. Usually the higher the temp, lower the resistance, and vice versa for a standard NTC (negative temp coeficient) sensor. The cluster just reads this resistance and constantly changes the temp reading depending on this resistance. I can go hold a lighter near the sensor and it will shoot up instantly.

Correcto mundo!! My outside temp will indicate a couple degrees different from the IAT as noted on the EDGE unit. 2 different sources of information.
