For those considering a K&N intake

I got my K&N put on and I am not very pleased with it at all. You have to relocate the throttle body. Thats the first I have ever heard of that. Talk about voiding your warranty, if the Ford garage saw that they would sh*t.

The sound is nothing like I excpeted either. My father-in-law has a Z71 with the 5.3L and his has a much deeper sound. Those who have had K&N's on other vehicles know the sound I mean.

Performance wise I know your not going to feel 10-15HP but it doesnt even act snappier.

Anyway, my 2 cents is that they are overrated on this particular vehicle.

I'm with you on this. I had the same experience with Airaid. Nothing against the quality of the product, just didn't feel the gains. I decided to sell it to get some money for other mods, and when I took it off I expected the engine to be quieter, or feel less pickup. I didn't feel the slightest difference.

I think this money is better spent elsewhere.

Did yours "whistle"? Mine whistles...

BTW that does not affect the warranty.

I have one on my 05. Love it. I noticed significant gains from a dead stop. Used to be, I couldn't even break the tires loose. That's not a problem now. I don't think I've ever noticed a whistle. I had one on my 2002 F150 and it was great for me as well. I love the sound at WOT.

The thing about these after market filters, the laws of physics still apply. To move more air, you have to open up the element. When you open up the element, you get more things that the filter is supposed to keep out (dirt).
There is no way you can haveone without the other...is it worth it?

Actually you need to take into consideration the massice intake system and the route it takes through the noise cancelling design as a restrictive sytem... A K&N filter out of the box will trap more debris that a paper filter. A dirty litte secret though is that they are actually more restrictive than a paper element.... (I have a link somewhere where some science d00d checked them all out.)

For daily driving any intake systems filter is fine. If you are doing Baja you might want to consider something more.....

I've got to disagree...if you replace a stock insert with a K&N, you get more air. And dirt. I have a car that sees track days, and when it's on the track, it gets a K&N. It's a noticable difference, performance wise.

Dodge will void your warrenty apperntly if you put a K&N style filter on there because it lets in more dirt also...

This is the link...

lol... the difference in flow is negligable. read this:
http://www.bobistheoilguy.com/airfilter/airtest2.htm

While the Filtration too is negligable. Read this:
http://www.bobistheoilguy.com/airfilter/airtest3.htm

So technically you are right, however the amount of flow that has changed would not translate into any real or measurable performance gains by simply changing an oem filter. (There is a difference however in putting in one of K&N's intake systems (which is what I have). Stock for oem replacment It flows slightly better and is not at good trapping dirt.

Bottom line is "I know that the stock OEM type filters perform very well in filtration and don't inhibit flow nearly as much as some think."

It has already been decided in US court that Dodge cannot void the warranty due to an aftermarket filter. It is part of K&N's advertising.

The biggest problem with some as far as trapping dirt with the k&n or any oiled filter is most people either never clean them or don't clean the correctly.Your best bet if your running a replacement panel is keep the stock one to use while the other is being cleaned. You should always let them dry 24hours before reoiling then let sit after to let eccess oil run off. We run k&n's on our grassdrag snowmobiles and you can see a difference if you don't take the extra time. I've also heard guys say they are getting more airflow cause they didn't oil the filter after cleaning, Might as well just leave em off.

That's odd that you say that. I had a K$N intake on my Bronco and it made a very noticable difference in both performance in gas mileage(Before was 8 mpg, after was about 12 or 13...351W sucked some major fuel). My father has one on his Tahoe and he as noticed an increase of 1-2 MPG as well.

K&N has 2 or 3 intakes according to their website. 2 require moving the throttle body, one does not. I reviewed the install pdf's before ordering and determined that moving the throttle body would probably be frowned upon as well so I ordered the other one.

I have the same intake and agree with ya. Had I known how little performance gain(VERY minimal) and the noise, I would have put the money towards something else(like a big screen TV). I still may put the stock intake back on due to the annoying noise at WOT.
