Guys with Brake Issues new TSB 05-21-19

Hey Guys,

I don’t know if you guys remember me but I am the guy that had a ton of trouble with his 04 F150. Brakes were part of my problem they were turned at 4K replace at 9K, turned again at 14K and then I was going to replace at 20K with aftermarket. I was at my dealer and told them that this was horrible and I wanted to speak to the manager. Management told me to wait till the middle of February as Ford has a new kit coming out.

Well took it in on Wednesday, new TSB 05-21-19 and the kit includes 2 new calipers, 2 new rotors and depending on build date a new steering rack. With the new brakes the truck stops much better, much more linear, and it doesn’t feel like I am riding my brakes around. I just thought I would pass this information along and hopefully it can help another F150 online member out.

I wish I could tell you. Here is what it says in my check out sheet

"Customer states there is a vibration at highway speeds. Test drove vehicle verified concern. Felt Shudder under braking. Checked OASIS for TSB found TSB 05-21-19 Inspected roters per TSB found LF Rotor old style rotor and RF rotor was at min spec of 1.12 before machining. NECC to replace both rotors and install updated caliper assemblies per tsb. Re-road test vehicle, no shudder felt. verified repair."

Talking with the service manager he said this was new in Feb, so not all qualify and he didn't say if it was a certain year. He did say that depending on build a new steering rack went with it.

Mine was built 11/24/04, the TSB says it has to be built before 11/29/04. Maybe I can get the new brakes too.

Brake dust seems to be about the same. I do like that it seems to stop better and there is not as much movement in the pedal to get the truck to stop.

Mine was built 11/17/04. The only brake problem I had was the dust. I solved that by replacing the pads myself.

Here's the TSB

TSB
05-21-19 FRONT BRAKE ROUGHNESS - SHUDDER WHILE BRAKING

Publication Date: October 17, 2005

FORD: 2004-2005 F-150

This article supersedes TSB 05-06-21 to add new parts and update Service Procedure.

ISSUE:
Some 2004/2005 F-150 vehicles built before 11/29/2004 may exhibit front brake roughness and or shudder while braking.

ACTION:
Service the rack and pinion, rotors, and caliper assemblies as needed, based on vehicle build date and current part levels installed on the vehicle. Refer to the following Service Procedure.

SERVICE PROCEDURE

Vehicles built prior to 8/20/2003 require the replacement of the rack and pinion assembly if it has not been replaced. Refer to Workshop Manual, Section 206-03 and 211-02.
Determine if the vehicle has the old or new level rotors (Figure 1).

Figure 1 - Article 05-21-19

If old level rotors, replace the front rotors and front caliper assemblies. Refer to Workshop Manual, Section 206-00 for front rotor and caliper replacement.
NOTE: WHEN REPLACING THE ROTORS ON 4X2 UNITS, A NEW SPINDLE NUT IS REQUIRED.

If new level (47 fin) rotors are present, perform one (1) of the following:
If rotors are within minimum thickness specifications, machine the rotors using the Rotunda on vehicle brake lathe and the Rotunda adapter kit 201-R0093. Refer to the Workshop Manual, Section 206-00 for the correct on-vehicle brake lathe procedure.
If rotors are beyond machinable thickness, the front rotors must be replaced.
Install new service fix calipers.
NOTE: REPLACE CALIPERS WITH NEW SERVICE FIX CALIPER ASSEMBLIES BY REMOVING THE CALIPERS AT THE KNUCKLES. THE SERVICE REPLACEMENT CALIPERS WILL BE PRE-ASSEMBLED WITH ANCHOR, SPRINGS, AND PADS. THE CALIPERS SHOULD BE INSTALLED AS A UNIT WITHOUT DISASSEMBLY.

The TSB is several months old. I had it done on mine about 2 months ago. Ever since they did the TSB, I've had a very soft brake pedal. I've had the truck back to the dealer twice and had the master cylinder replaced. That helped but it's still not the same as before the TSB was done. I hope you have better luck with it.

That is crazy! Mine has almost gotten me rearended twice now because when I hit the brakes it is like both feet are on the pedal. Sorry to hear about you troubles.

Kind of makes me mad though my dealer said this was a brand new TSB and it appears to be several months old. Why would they tell me that, does it not benefit them to do the warranty work? I have been waiting since January for this TSB and my brakes were getting really bad.
