Re-occuring theme: Dissapointed in MPG

Is it just me or when you look at the sticker on a new truck's window and it says 14city/18hwy you can expect to get something similar to that when you drive the truck?

I have never had better than 14mpg in my truck... open hwy 300+ miles cruisin at 65mph.

What the heck is going on here? I bought the Extang RT tonneau and thought I'd see a difference after a couple thousand of miles... nothing. I know these trucks are bricks but come'on, I've never got close to 18mpg and would be thrilled if I got 16mpg.

Any tips? under-drive pulleys, e-fans, and then what?

Our trucks can get ok gas mileage, I get about 18 hwy,
I have Xcal2 "troyer tuned" AF1 and a magnaflow system, thease mods have helped me out a little but I do see people on here talk good things about the E-fans, I'm sure a few will pop up on here.... good luck with your MPG

14 MPG seems low for the highway. I've gotten as good as 17.7 MPG going 70 MPH, and 18.5 MPG going 60-65 MPH. The only exterior mod I have is an Undercover tonneau cover. BTW, I have an '05 SuperCrew, FX4, 3.73 LS, 5.4L.

I also have an Edge tuner, and it seems to have helped my city mileage. However, I haven't had the chance to make an extended highway trip with it yet, so I can't say if it improves highway mileage or not. Some on this board have said the Edge helped more with city mileage than highway mileage. Regardless, it will be a long time before a tuner "pays for itself" with improved mileage. If nothing else, it might be worth mentioning your poor gas mileage to your dealer the next time you take it in.

Can you provide some additional details about your truck (engine, trim level, gearing, tires, mods, build date, gas mileage in city driving, etc.)? These details might help us compare your truck's mileage with comparable vehicles.

Also, as you know, these are heavy trucks...they weren't really built with gas mileage in mind. They were, however, designed to tow and haul people and stuff--and they do that very well!

I get about 13 City and around 16-17 highway averaging 65mph.

But if I got 9 total I wouldnt care...I didnt care what the sticker said about MPG. I wanted a truck and understood that fuel economy wasnt part of the deal.

Those stickers are best case scenario under perfect driving conditions

I usually am in the 12-14mpg range in town. I haven't been out of town with it really yet. It is what it is.

If I had gas milage similar to what you all are posting I wouldn't be complaining. What annoys me is this bogus number that Ford tells me my pickup will get. Granted it is a pickup and I'm not expecting high mileage, but I expect to get close to what Ford tells me.

My truck is an 05 F150 XLT 5.4 Scab 4x4 w/3.55 gears...

I changed out my wheels and tires from 255/70-17 to 285/65-18 so there is a 4.9% difference in the mileage that I have already accounted for. When I put on the Extang RT I wasn't expecting any changes but hoped for a difference... nothing changed. Also threw on the 2" Autospring level kit... no change in mileage when I installed this.

As for city mileage I get just under 14mpg... I pretty much get 14mpg whatever I do. When I'm on the highway I drive light, only stepping into it to pass and never going above 3k when I do.

I want to live to see the day my truck can show one trip mileage of 18mpg on the highway

im running an 05 FX4 3.7ls supercab, rollbak hard tonneau, roush exhaust. when i had the stock tires on (276/65r18) the highest i got on the highway going 75 @ 1900 rpm was 15.2 mpg, in town, i got 10 mpg. now with my 1" larger diameter (33"), but heavy lug toyo MT's i get 13-14 mpg max going 75 @ 2100 rpms and 8-10 in town.
I understand your annoyment. even when stock, i never met the expectations, and I changed from stock at about 5000 odometer.

Through my first tank, I only got 13-14 miles in combined highway city.

I have a 4.6 supercab 2wd, I was somewhat disappointed, but we will see how it goes.

In the end, I knew what i was getting into when I bought it, but would be pretty happy with the couple more MPG I was expecting from the 4.6.

I do LOVE my truck though

Well I think the confusion is some people talking about MPG over the course of an entire tank. Meanwhile others are giving the MPG at the speed they are going (refreshing the little MPG readout while running down the highway).

If running down the highway my little MPG reader says 19-23 mpg. However, with traffic on the highway, a little in town driving, one or two flooring it moments, I average about 13 mpg for the entire tank.

I honestly and firmly believe my MPG went down when I put on the magnaflow SIDO muffler. And no it's not because I was hitting the gas harder to hear it, because as some know I have no aching to make it louder, but rather quieter.

I'm seriously contimplating a Troyer tune and hopefully that will help the fuel efficiency. But then again, will all these mods pay for themself in gas savings? Haha, probably in like 50 years.

Just filled up today. For the ENTIRE tank I got 10.5 mph. That is about 96% city driving in the winter. Thats also with the Edge on level 2. My last tank was at 12. The only difference now is that I have a Magnaflow si/so. Hope that is not that problem.

Don't everyone take this the wrong way but this isn't about what mileage you're getting... it's about how off the charts Ford advertises the mileage for these trucks.

I don't think that 14/18 is accurate. Why? Because all I ever see is 14mpg. I should not have to throw several hundred dollars at my truck to get it to perform similarly to what the factory claims it should already be performing.

People around here are trading in their Fords because the mileage is nothing close to what they are expecting.

I think it's too easy to settle for what Krohbar said, "It is what it is". Yes, it's a truck, and yes trucks do not get good gas mileage, but many of us are settling for the bottom end of the scale here.

Should Ford have listed the MPG performance as 12/15 instead? Doesn't that seem more honest?
