How much am I hurting my performance...

...if I just get a drop-in air filter like K&N instead of an AF1 or another CAI system? I know the MPG improves very little with both, but performance wise I am unaware... I took the air silencer out already... I have an '05 4.6. I plan on getting a new exhaust set up next week or so as well... Then sometime this spring/summer, i will get an edge or troyer tune... Just tryin to save a buck or two with the air intake...

You aren't hurting by putting that filter in. There are better options though.

Have you looked into bamachips tuning? They are a leading competitor with the troyer tuning. Jusnes Modified can hook you up with them.

Thanks guys... I will stick to a drop in... When I get done with the truck as for lift and tires, it wont matter how fast I get to where I am goin!! With a SCrew 4x4, im not gonna be racing. I just want better performance, and I will definately get that with a drop in, exhaust and tuning! Also, I havent seen that tuner listed here yet... Price about the same? Any more info on it?

the drop in and silencer is ok, but as far as performance, youre not going to be hurting it, but you wont be improving it by much. there are some very affordable intakes out for the 4.6 that would notice some serious gains on, the best design i have seen is the S&B and they are pretty cheap

Just make sure you go with Magnaflow exhaust and you should be OK. Stay away from those chambered mufflers like Flowmasters. The low end of 4.6Ls is weak as it is and they get weaker with chambered mufflers. As for the intake, the S&B or Volant will suit you well. My Volant is on the way!

If ya dont mind me askin? Where did you get your volant? Seems that everybody is goin the intake route now... I thought I read somewhere here in a thread that CAI's were really just show, thats why I was gonna get a drop in if it wasnt gonna benefit much more than a 40.00 drop in...I plan on getting magnaflow 18" installed in a couple of weeks. Thanks again!

I got my Volant from JusnesModified. www.jusnesmodified.com. $250 with coupon code "Volant." Excellent customer service there, I highly reccomend it.

I have used the stock, the K&N drop in, and the Brute Force. There is almost no horsepower to be found in the 4.6 at the intake. The stock one is pretty good.
If you like Vroom sounds then any of the intakes will probably float your boat.

The best gas mileage I have attained on my Reg cab 4x2 is with the K&N drop in. Better than the AEM or the stock air filter.
I have a Mag Catback and I've used the Superchips and Diablo Predator on my truck.

Least difference is from playing with the intake.

I would put it last on any list of mods.
Again, that is on the 4.6. The 5.4 seems to respond better on the intake upgrades.

Agreed. With the 5.4 you will get the most bang for your buck with an intake... just get the drop in with your 4.6 If you want the real power and performance, get a blower Im stickin with the drop in on mine... I wont mod this besides that and a cover for the back. I will get another used Lightning in a couple years. Then have fun with mods Rob

Thats what I was thinking as far as cost vs actual increase in performance... With the silencer out, it already sound like I have an intake system. I rather put money into an exhaust and tuner... save 200 bux where I can!! Thanks everyone!
