Arrow New Project:puttin in a 6 speed

After much deliberation i think im going to put a 6 speed in my truck. The reason being i want a manual and dont want a car. I was told i need to get the t-56 system from tremec transmissions. Any feedback on this is great, ive never done anything like this and im wondering how much it will cost.

www.ddperformance.com is a good source for T56s and parts/fitting items. A t56 is going to cost you anywhere from 1500-2500 for the tranny itself. I'm not sure why you'd be told you need a T56, you could get away with a TKO I suppose...unless you specifically wanted 6 speeds or it happens to be the same length as the current tranny. TKOs are very nice as well. The other thing to check into would be whether a tuner can disable shift points and the automatic tranny features, otherwise the truck will rev or drop rpms when it thinks it's going to shift, which would be VERY screwed up especially if you put 6 speed in there being that everything would be very far off considering the span between gears in each. Bellhousing/block bolt pattern shouldn't be a problem, or at least it wasn't for the modular 2v 4.6 and 5.4, not sure about the 3v. The other thing might be a driveshaft and different or modified crossmember. Good luck, projects rock

I agree about D&D being a great place to do business with for tranny parts. They have supplied me with stuff for my previous stangs/cobra.

The stock gear ratio's in our autos are 2.84, 1.55, 1.0 & .7 incase you need to know.

Why do you think/know you want a manual tranny?

Good luck on this. I don't think anybody else has attempted to do this. It's going to be a MAJOR PITA to do.

Sounds like an awesome project, hope everything works.
Your truck would be the perfect candidate for .

It has been done before on an earlier model F-150(97-03). It was a pretty slick install and looked factory. I am pretty sure it was around $3500 for everything(correct me if I am wrong).

Good Luck

Ford should offer the 5.4L with a manual trans. I believe you "need" the T56 because of the torque level of the 5.4. Please take lots of pictures.

Well of course you can't use a stock T5 or something like that, but you don't "need" a 6 speed to handle what the truck can put out that's all I was saying. T56s are fairly "weak" in stock form (475hp/400tq)...Viper Spec T56s (650hp/600tq) are stronger, and as strong as TKOs are stock (550-650hp/600tq).

How are you going to account for the fact that your PCM is sending signals to a transmission that isnt there? The PCM may freak out....

Contact the people that did the 6 speed conversion that was listed in this forum a few days ago (the truck that sold at BJ). They will probably be a wealth of knowledge. Personally, i would like a 5 speed auto out of a SuperDuty or Expedition (if they make it).

Good Luck!!

Previously, this was merely a bit setting in the code, and I believe it was only 1 flag, and that toggled sending the transmission signals or not...previously I mean on 03 and earlier vehicles such as my 00 Mustang. So yeah, I'm not sure if that's the case anymore, or if it's even accessible if that is the fact. That's the main thing you want to check out, otherwise you might have to swap out the PCM/ECU. This would be a very cool project if you did it, but I think it's going to be quite a bit of trial and error to get it right being that these trucks are so new and so electronic.

If I remember correctly its going to run you $3500 or so.
I am surprised no-one else has seen this swap, it looked real clean.
Good Luck, keep everyone posted. And dont forget to take tons of pics.
