AIr Inlet Temps vs Ambient

All of you guys with the EDGE programmer, do a little experiment for me. I want to know the difference between the IAT (Inlet Air Temp) as indicated on the EDGE unit vs the Ambient (outside) air temp. Make sure that your engine is up to temp. Also let me know if you have a stock intake or aftermarket. It should be interesting to see how "Cold" these cold air intakes are...

I'll check mine tonight. I'm running the stock intake and filter. I do have a Magnaflow catback. I'll take the ambiant off the instrument cluster (usually within a couple degrees of actual). Very interesting experiment.

I've been watching mine since new, as I also have a Scanguage. The EDGE usually shows a 2-4 degree difference in temp. Of course it goes up when idling at a red light. In the hot Arizona summer, it's not uncommon to see a 30-40 degree temp difference while at a red light in heavy traffic. Cruising at speed it's normally in the 2-4 degree difference. At WOT it will drop to the same or only 1 degree off.

P.S. I have also driven with the snorkle off of my intake and the idle temp will go high guicker, but at speed the temp is within 2-4 degrees.

Just got back from about an hour long drive. Temp is in the mid 20's. On the highway the inlet air temp was a pretty consistent 2 degrees above ambient. In town it was about 4 degrees above and at a stop light it went to 7 degrees above ambient temp.

With the shaker, the temps were 1-2 deg above ambient. So, the stock does a good job i think.

I bet the "cold air intakes" will be warmer

Back in 2002 I did this experiment with a few different intakes, AutoTap and a Datacollection probe with Thermocouples with taking fender and underhood temps.

The Graph of Ambinent Temp to fender well temp ( where a CAI will draw from ) and the underhood temps :

The thread with the write up :

All in all, the CAI temp is only slightly lower with the under 35mph type driving, and at speed are on par temp wise with an open element filter, but actually flow less air at the MAFS then an open filter.

I came full route doing several builds of intakes, and finalized on a design that is damn close to the Air Force One filter on my 2001 ( pics in galery )
