2005 5.4L auto tranny

I've been reading both here and in the tranny section, but still no real answer.

This 2005 transmission seems so different than the one in my 2002. I'm thinking its the torque converter. Its so much more obvious in the 05 -really feels like a 5th gear. The old one would lock/unlock nearly unnoticed, but this one is really obvious and annoying.

Seems like it locks up way to early and unlocks way to late. Feels like I'm driving an early 80's GM car with their OD tranny! (If you've ever been in one you'll know what I mean!). The slightest grade makes the converter lock/unlock constantly -doesn't come out of OD, but really feels like its 'hunting' between gears.

I'm using an Xcal2, by the way, and it really didn't affect this any differently than the stock program.

Anyone else with this?

05 tranny

I have an 05 f150 xlt 4X4 with the auto. Yes I can feel the shift going into OD. It is not to bad but it is noticeably different from other fords that i have owned. Does your 05 roll back while in gear on slight inclines? Mine does.

I have an 01 and an 05 and I totally understand what you are saying. This was the main reason I wanted try one of the Edge programmers to get rid of this and other sloppy shifting issues. After installing my Edge today it totally eliminated this "hunting" and the shifting is now even better than the 01 is.

Yes it does roll backwards. After talking to Mike at Troyer Perf.( I have the Xcal 2). I understand better what is going on inside a torque converter and how low on torque these 3v 5.4L's are at 1600-1800 RPM. Probably best to just turn off OD when it starts the lock/unlock thing on a gradual incline!

Also the low BTU winter fuel may be why I noticed this more now than when I first got it in the summer. 8-10% lower BTU knocks about 4-6% of the torque down according to Mike.
