I got a new HU

It's the brand new 2006 Alpine CDA-9856 with the new Full Speed iPod interface. No more stupid box! It ships on 2-6-06 from Crutchfield.

My question is...
Does anyone have a picture of a single DIN HU installed with the Crutchfield installation surround? I'm wondering how flush it is against the center stack. Thanks!

I ordered mine last week...if no one else has pictures, I'll take some so you can see it once I have it installed

This the exact kit they have (Scosche, if I remember correctly). If you notice, I couldn't fit my Alpine trim ring without trimming the kit, so I didn't put it on. With this kit, you can adjust how flush you want your HU. Congrats on your purchase!

BTW, I posted this in "head Units" forum too.

That looks good. I was worried about it sticking out too far which I have seen on some trucks but that looks like a perfect fit. Thanks.

Glad to see that you got an Alpine HU. I'm liking the Ipod feature. Will not buy one though

Won't buy what? An Alpine or an iPod? Both are awesome by the way.

I was wrong, actually the install kit is a Metra.

Alpine's website lists it at $230. Crutchfield has it for $200 and they throw in the kit, the wiring harness, and the DIN removal tool and instructions. And free shipping! I figured that was a pretty good deal. I'm going to try and do it myself, but worst case is I take it somewhere and pay $30 to have it installed.
I thought $200 was an awesome price for the features this thing has. I'm not going overboard with a big system, so this deck will be more than enough for what I want. And you can't go wrong with Alpine!

I have both an Alpine and an Ipod. I won't go and get a new HU because I just bought mine last year. CDA-9855. I hear also that the external Ipod box is slow in displaying text and in playback. Anyone witness this?

I didn't think it needed one. Just a straight bolt on, right?
But they're giving me one anyways.

You are right, the box is slow. That's why for 2006 they did away with it and went to this 'Full Speed' direct connection. I had an older Alpine deck in my old truck and I was able to connect my iPod to it through an AUX input in the back using a special cable that was $25 at circuit city. It didn't show up on the screen or anything but it was CD sound through the head unit. I just had to control it using the iPod. Maybe that is something you might want to look into.

Here is the cable. $15.99 @ crutchfield. KCA-121B AI-net adapter.

Yup, just pull the radio bezel and unbolt the headunit. Easiest install ever probally.

I'm just worried about all the wiring. It's nothing I haven't done before, I just always get nervous taking things apart and playing with electricity.
