Ford Navigation

Has anyone out there tried installing a navigation unit from an Expedition? Have there been any rumors for a nav unit from ford to fit our 04/05/06 trucks? I've seen aftermarket units for our trucks but I've also seen Ford units on e-bay that the seller says "might" fit our trucks. Any help or suggestions would be appreciated.

I install nav systems for a living and the eclipse system is hard to beat. Take a look at the avn5435, it has more audio controls, 5volt preamp with sub out, esn security, dvd movie capability, etc. It will fit the dash with a standard metra kit, the only wire thats not at the radio plug is a true 12v illumination wire(very easy to get on driverside). The unit looks much better and performs much better than the ford piece, with a price similar to the factory unit.

Is that a double din unit? I'm looking for one that does not require a cheap plastic install filler plate (god, I hate those disgusting things). If its factory size, then I'm there...

5435 Installed!

It is, as you can see, a double-din unit.

The only 'cons' that I've found to the unit thus far is that the maps are a bit dated. I'm told by Eclipse customer service, however, that they plan to have an update by the end of the year so, we'll see how that plays out. The 5435 is a DVD unit but, if you're using navigation, you're not going to be able to watch a DVD. The 5495 (the 5435's big brother) has an on board hard drive and can accept mp3 music (as well as a memory stick). Further, the maps are stored on the hard drive. It's a nice upgrade but, with as little MP3 music as I listen to, it wasn't worth it to me.

Lots of information here at f150online.com about this unit...Here are a couple of links:

Happy Reading!!! Ask any questions that you may have... several of us have this unit.

The Expedition's head unit isn't even the same size as an F150s. This has been beaten down in a few posts before...most of the navigation units offered optionally in Ford vehicles require communication on the SCP network throughout the rest of the truck. It needs a reference from the MLP sensor to sense when the transmission is in reverse (for vehicle direction changes), one from the ABS module for vehicle speed, and an external GPS antenna for vehicle position. The F150 is not wired for this, it's radio requires no communication from the rest of the SCP network, it's relatively simple. The head units will likely bolt up and power up, but they won't work properly. Your best bet would be an aftermarket head unit, like the Eclipse 5435/95 or the Kenwood DDX7017 with the nav add on.
