This is a 2005 FX4 I think, but my 2006 Screw has the same thing. It is in the rear, under the bed, near the spare tire. (This photo is tilted 90 degrees, thats the frame on the right side pointing up)

That's the brake balancing system.

 

I thought is was to hide your stash on long distance trips.

Didn't these used to be in the engine compartment area?

 

Actually it is an Illudium Q-36 explosive space modulator!
