Edge - Mileage test

Oops, put this in the wrong forum. Few of us even go to the chip forum with all the craziness that goes on in there...anyway I posted this over there by accident.
-----------------------------

So this week I had to travel three times to a site about an hour and a half from my house. The engineer in me said, Hmmm...three days and there happens to be three Tunes in the edge that need mileage figures...must be fate.

Disclaimers: This is not a perfect test, the three trips were done on consecutive days but the temps varied a few degrees, wind changed direction and strength, the moon's phase was 2 days off between the first and third day and there wasn't time to have MGD come verify the tightness of my seatbelt (you know I love you). Your mileage may vary, this was a test for me and me alone. I live in Denver, that's 5800 feet above sea level, the air is thin here so mileage suffers, power suffers but the good news is my truck still weighs as much as yours.

The Test: 5 minutes of street driving to the highway, 1 hour of 70mph with cruise on (no such thing as a flat road here...lots of hills) 10 minutes of street driving to destination....return in reverse order. Pretty simple. I took it very easy on all accelerations...looking for MPG on this test. All MPG's read on lariat stock system...no I didn't fill up each day and check the accuracy. I assume if it's inaccurate it should be equally inaccurate for all tests and it's the difference I'm looking for. The result surprised me to be honest, but these are the results so I thought I would toss them out for others to make fun of.

The Results:

Level 3 (performance tune)

- 15.4 mpg

Level 2 (towing tune)

- 16.8 mpg

Level 1 (tranny tune)

- 17.5 mpg

Now, I bought the Edge on my trucks second week...about 1800 miles into it's life, so break in was certainly still going..but my best mileage prior to the edge was a tank at 15.5. Unfortunately it will be a while before I need to repeat that trip out there, but next time out I will do an identical run with the stock program back in...I'm curious what the comparison is. My 04 suburban did this run with an average around 17...stock.

Well, there you have it. Make of it what you will...that is how the edge treated me the last few days.

Bill

Great observation. I do however question the reading on the actual Lariat info cluster. My dad and i were riding in his and just for fun we kept hitting reset and at one point we were getting 32 mpg. Like you said though if it is inaccurate it is equally inaccurate. Thanks for putting time into the test though. One of these days i will have to get a tuner b/c 15 mpg in my reg. cab w/ 5.4 and 3.55 gears is not cutting it . My pops' Supercrew 5.4 w/ 3.73 gets better mpg and he dogs the **** out of it.

hmm
300 miles on 87 = 19.48 gallons @ $2.10 = $40.91
300 miles on 93 = 17.14 gallons @ $2.30 = $39.42

Oh dang, if I'm right that is actually cheaper to run 93 octane.
Am I right?!?....please say I am

EDIT:
Mostly highway driving, hmm.
Might just do this w/my XCal2 when it gets here. Fun Fun!

I think you have it backwards...the level 1 is the 87 tune and the level 3 is the 91 (or 93) tune.

I'm not sure I'm following you Craz3d. Or I explained the test badly (likely). I was testing the three stock Edge tunes. The octane was set at 91 in all three (by me). The first tested was the most agressive tune, then the towing tune and finally the tranny tune and mileage varied exactly with how agressive the tune is.

Now that I see how each tune compares to the others in mileage I can experiment with settings within them to see how those can be tweaked to better it further. The last tune is supposed to be tranny only, but I used customize to carry settings over each time I reset the tune...so may have inadvertantly brought more than the tranny into play. I've had the flu all week so my head isn't quite in the game but I had to go to this job anyway so used the boring 3 hours of driving each day to some advantage. Ok, back to the nyquil

The level 1 tune from Edge just changes the trans shifting, level 2 is for towing and level 3 is the performance tune. Is that how you tested or was your level 1 the performance tune, level 2 tow and level 3 trans?

Hahaha, ok I've screwed you guys all up. I tested it like this and in this order.

Level 3, then level 2, then level 1. Which means I tested the performance tune (worst mileage), the tow tune (better mileage), and last the tranny only tune (best mileage).

Hope that clears it up. This fever has me all messed up...should have been clearer.

I gained almost 2 mpg on the PErformance tune (94 octane settting) over the performance setting of my 1714. This was calculated (miles driven/gallon to fill up). I was getting high 15s and maybe a 16 everynow and then. First tank with the edge, BAM 18.0. And that was with SEVERAL 0-60 and 1/4 mile tests
I'm not even going to bother with the trans only....

...Or, your seatbelt is indeed too tight and you are cutting off circulation to your thinking parts

Your results are exactly opposite of what is expected, and what I see on my 9100's tunes.

That is some strange numbers. I get 20 to 20.6 on mine stock. This is driving 70. I did goto Abasin couple weeks ago. Had to use 4x4 and think I only got 13. Lots of hills through there that keeps the rpms up around 3k

My Superchip for my 01 gave me 1 mpg more but my 1714 gave me worse than stck on the performance setting. I agree that you should get better mileage because of the increase hp/torque but i guess it depends on the truck among other things.

F Y I . . .

EDGE contacted me this week and told me that an update will be released soon which enables instant MPG (similar to the Scangauge) as one of the parameters you can set on the display. They will also be adding idle speed adjustment ability. I will post once it is released if it hasn't already been announced.

I think the update is downloadable to your unit, so no waiting.
