That is exactly what I used. Figured it would prevent scratches and then future rust. My truck is black but the wheel wells weren't painted black so I did that right a way.
I have also heard of people using the spray on bedliner in a can. That works very well also.
I did mine the 1st week I had it (and my brothers too)...even though mine is black - it wasn't painted under there! I used the 3M rubberized undercoating and it is holding up very well and keep the rocks thrown up from the tire tread from scratching the paint under there - plus it was butt ugly not being painted - looks great
At least yours was Silver under there (matching your body color) mine was a primer color sort of greenish gold
