Removing ashtray

How do you remove JUST the ashtray (not the entire console) from the 2006 F150? I want to look into modifying it to hold a Sirius tuner, but need to make it open a little further...

Thanks!

I'd like to know too. Just picked up a Sirius Starmate tonight & the ashtray looks like a great place to put it. However, I need to find out how the ashtray comes out so I can modify it to accommodate the Starmate. Thanks in advance, Boomer.

You have to pull off the facing around the ashtry, air system and radio to expose the screws holding the ash tray in. Try a search on ashtry reamoval, ashtry rattle, etc.. Someone has some detailed instructions with pictures, but I forget who.

You have to remove the facia around the radio/AC/etc to get to the top two bolts of the ashtray. Once you remove the two bolts the ashtray lifts out as the bottom part extends an inch or so below the what is visable.

I just mounted my Sirius Starmate Reply in my ashtray today. Here are some good links that I used in the process...

I put the antenna out of the hi mount (3rd) brake light. I also hooked into radio using a PIE interface. Works well.

Thanks T-case. What did you tap into for your power source? I'd like to find one that is switched if possible.

For the PIE, I tapped the back of the cigerette lighter. This is constant power which PIE recommends in their instructions. Then for the Sirius, I tapped the Light Green with Yellow striped wire. I beilieve its on the Left Side (while facing the front of the audio unit) pin connector for the stereo. Either way it's the only wire of that color on any of the stereo harnesses. That lead is switchd so it will turn off with the delay just like the radio.

No problem. Good luck modifying the ashtray. That took me a good hour or two to dremel it out.

T-case, one last question. Do you have a pic or two of how you modified the ashtray? I have my ashtray out and now I just need to find the "stones" to start carving on the plastic.

Don't have a pic just yet so let me decribe what I did.

1) create a template on paper of the Sirius tuner. I marked horizonal center and a vertical center line on the template.

2) Removed ashtray, then covered face with blue painter's tape. Marked horizonal and vertical center lines on the tape.

3) Center and trace template on the blue tape.

4) dremeled out the face and i had to cut slots in the area behind the face plate for cables. You have to go thru the face plate and the interior ashtray.

5) drilled a few holes in the back of the ashtray to run the wires.

I found this last night which you could use to disassemble the ashtray...might make it easier... http://users.cableaz.com/%7Ekinzerfo...o_Glasses.html

Ah, you cut through the faceplate of the ashtray. I'm thinking I'll remove the ashtray insert, then modify the inside of the ashtray drawer to accommodate the starmate. That way I can close the ashtray drawer & hide the starmate. Should look real clean if all goes right.

KSUWildcat- I live in the Wichita area. I'm a K-State guy too, graduated in '91. I sure hope coach Prince is the real deal.......he's an impressive speaker, I just hope the guy can coach. I really like the fact that he got that QB Freeman to commit to KSU. GO STATE!!!

Does anyone know if there's any truth to the rumor that the PIE while tapped into the constant hot really drains the battery if you leave your truck sitting for two weeks or so? I can't imagine they would invent the thing so that it would do that.
