Should I trade?

I know it's long, but please bear with me...

I'm looking at a 2005 4x4 SuperCrew XLT. I'm getting a heck of a deal on it - $1500 under simple plan price and I have committed to buying it. I'm considering whether or not to trade in my '99 F150 regular cab, flairside, 4x4, ORP, Trailer Tow, etc. with 125k on the clock. I would like to keep it to save miles and wear on the new ride as I drive about 20-25k miles per year. I'm being offered $6500 in trade, so I don't know what I should do. I'm trying to weigh the options between money saved on the new truck, extra insurance, tax, license costs, and the attachment I have to the old truck. It was my first new vehicle and I've had it for 7+ years and 125k miles. It still runs great, but you never know when they will start nickel and diming you into a hole.

OK, now, after you've read my long sad sob story, what do you guys think? I'm torn, and have until Friday to decide...I pick the truck up on Sat. morning. And, of course, pics will follow soon afterwards!!

Thanks in advance!!

If you don't need the money of the trade in, then hold on to the 99. you can keep it or sell it later for more than the dealer will give you on a trade.
Your insurance will be cheaper if the new truck is not the primary vehicle.

Are you also getting the $4000 rebate under the simple plan price?

I would keep the 99 f150, at least for the winter and sell it on your own in the spring. You can get more the 6500 for it if you sell it on your own.

Yep, the trade in value is always lower than the private party price. A lot lower. If they will give you 6500, they think they can sell it for 11,000. Which means you can sell it for 8500 next spring.

Yes, I am getting the $4k rebate...actually, it's $5k...under simple plan. I've also got another $750 rebate card in the mail from Ford. Total is $23743 outright without my trade.

I was thinking I could get more than $6500 too, but now is good because it saves roughly $250 in sales tax and $150 in property tax for next year. I'm leaning towards keeping it like you guys suggest.

The only problem I see with selling it yourself is dealing with the tire kickers...I f*ing hate that. Its a used truck with 125K miles on it...you dont have to point out every little thing wrong with it. Another thing to consider is being a private sell the person buying will have to find their own financing and thats not so easy with a truck with 125K miles on it, especialy when you think the people that are in the market for a very used 125K mile truck are most likely not going to be the easiest to get financed to start with.

If it was me I would just trade it if I wasnt going to keep it for a lot longer, but thats just because I hate dealing with people.

Keep the 99. You always come out better not to trade with a dealer.

When i was looking for an nice clean, older truck before i bought my 04, the only ones i found were 6000 and up. This was a 96 (old style) 2wd. I think you can get WAYYYYY more than $6500 for a 4x4. Bring it down to Bama and get top $$$ for it..

Well almost 2 months ago when i bought my new truck I traded in my 2000 reg cab with 96000 on the clock I got 8600 for trade on it it it was a 4x2 with the 4.6 V8. I was looking at a 2004 xlt 4x4 reg cab they offerd 9000 trade on it but the truck was as is so i asked if they had any 05 xlt reg cabs they had one a 4x2 so i went with the 05 truck at first they only offerd my 6200 but i did old I think about it and was headed to the door and was asked what would it take to get me in either of the 2 and siad no to the used one and said how much i would pay a month for the new one at 0% I figured they wouldn't do it but they did and brought my trade up to the 8600 on my old truck that was going to need some trany work the only reason I was looking for a new ride in the first place.
