Question fuel guage acting whacky

im not sure if someone has had a similar problem, but a funny thing happened when filling my truck this morning... i filled er up and when i restarted the truck, the needle stayed at the same point is was at before i added the gas. after several tries of shutting off the truck, no changes. i waited a cpl hours and went for a drive. the guage now reads a little more than half full. hopefully itll go back to normal. i know its not a big deal, but has anybody else had a similar problem? thanks

Mine did that exact same thing once. I think someone posted an "easy fix" for it since then, but what I did to fix it was unhook the battery for 90sec. It worked fine after that.

Did you have the key turned on ( motor off ) while filling the tank? I did that once and my gauge did the same thing you're describing. It worked normal again after a day or two. Not to hijack your thread but, did you get your truck all repaired after you "bumped" that curb?

yeah i did have the key in the on position while fueling... i thought that mightve had something to do with it. im glad that it should fix itself. ill reset the pcm if it doesnt.

nope havent fixed the truck yet... lack of funds i was able to straighten the bumper a bit more so u can hardly tell anything happened to it. still need 2 wheels and tires and a new fender...

but i recently came across these that i think ill get a pair of when the time comes

Mine did that when the dealer first filled it when I picked it up. It was fine the next day so I don't know why it did it.

I normally leave my key turned forward so the radio stays on while filling up. I've never had this problem.

Turn the key one more click forward while filling your tank and you'll see what we're talking about.

Mine is slow to climb any time I turn the key on while filling up. Mine usually takes about 30 minutes of driving time to reach full.

Going off of memory you have 1 click forward which is run then the next thing forward is starting the truck.

I turn the truck off then trun the key forward again so when I open the door the radio doesn't turn off.

there are 2 individual positions for the key to be in. 1st click is to run the ACC. 2nd is to turn on all of the devices that are on while the truck is actually running. pushing the key past the second click asctually starts the truck

Mine has done this a few times a while back, and the keys were not even in the ignition. I took it to the dealer and they showed me a TSB that said it had to do with the type of fuel being used and that some fuels used additives that were causing problems with the fuel level sensors sometimes? I told them I always filled up at Shell, which is supposedly a better fuel. It miraculously has quite doing it though, go figure. I did have my PCM reflashed awhile back though too but I don't recall if it was before or after the guage issues. It hasn't done it though in at least six months.

The key should be in the off position for quickest response from the fuel gauge when refilling...accessory ain't gonna cut it, it's gotta be off. In the default fuel mode (called anti slosh, to take into account fuel level changes from the fuel sloshing around in the tank), it can take up to 55 minutes to get a true fuel level reading.

I've tried the Techron fuel cleaner bit in some vehicles with funky fuel gauges. The reasoning is excessive sulfur content in the fuel, which builds up on the float and causes false readings. All the ones I've tried it in ended up needing senders anyways. Ford's official stance is to try the fuel system cleaner, and stand by until engineering figures out a fix.

Mine does this twice per year. Once in the spring and once in the fall. I think it has to do with the winter gas/summer gas change over.

Mine recently did this also. Two days ago I filled up with 24.65 gallons but the guage was still reading "empty". I had to take a couple looks at the pump just to make sure that I put in $50.00 and not $5.00. I did not leave the key in the ignition while filling up (I never do). At home I tried bouncing up and down on the trailer hitch thinking that the float was stuck or something. Nothing I could do would make any effect on the guage. Only time corrected the problem. After driving around abit the guage slowly climbed until it reached full. It was kind of funny watching my gas guage steadly climb while going down the road.

Mine did the same thing for the first time this weekend. Started at the point of shut off, steadily climbed up to the full mark for about 30 miles.
