Crack in Windshield

I know it may not be germane to this particular forum, but I couldn't find another one more suited. Thanks to a flying lug nut, I now have a 5 inch crack on the top of my windshield. It is about 1/2 an inch down from the top of the windshield, but the crack ran down about 5 inches. What have you guys used to mend a crack? I know it will never be as good as new, but I want to prevent it from cracking any further and possibly mask it a little. TIA.

I have used the epoxy for chips.... I don't think it will work for a 5" crack though

A glass company will use an epoxy and a dremel to run the fluid into the crack you might get it done pretty cheap through them. I had to get mine replaced because the crack still bothered me.

I have been told by many glass companies that if its a chip, its often repairable. once it turns in to a crack, even 1/2" to an inch crack, it is already going along hte weak points of the windshield and fixing it will only be a superficial fix, as it will continue to crack. So you can do like everyone in Denver does, and just deal with it, or get a new windshield, unfortunately.

I was told if a dollar bill can cover it then they can "repair" it.

They can use the epoxy to stop the crack from progressing any further, but thats about it, you'll still see the crack.

Temperature changes in the future may also lead to the crack to continue.
A fix with a crack my be a temp fix.
A new windshield is in your future.

I had a dump truck throw some junk up from the road at me last time I was in Texas on I-35, hitting my windshield approx. 2" or so above the wiper cowl. It started off as a 3" crack, then on the way back by the time we hit Louisiana, it was about 6" and gradually grew until it spanned the width of the windshield over the course of about two days. FWIW, most insurance companies will take care of glass replacement, since it is a safety item. Mine didn't (then again, I didn't really check), and it was $341 for a Carlite replacement installed.
