Pic with added XLT mirrors, touch of chrome

Got these pictures the other day. I recently added power mirrors and finished putting chrome handle covers, fuel lock door, and tailgate covers on. The extra chrome is to 'go with' the HD grille. I think it came out well.

The XLT mirrors are 1.25 inch bigger than the stock STX manual mirrors and gives it a better view. For those with XL and STX, upgrading the mirrors is pretty easy and does result in a better rear picture. The mirrors are just as tall, but the triangle shaped inner part of the mirror is more help than I would have expected.

Well, the actual job is not very hard.
I spent days on switch placement, pros-cons. Also some time was spent thinking about the harness plugs and learning the wiring.
After that the actual job was not a full morning’s work. Pulling the door panels on these trucks is easy, and I pulled the side dash panel by the driver’s door, the glove box and the black surround (passenger side only) at the bottom of the center dash.
All of that takes under a half hour. My truck has the simple boots in the doors, so running the wires is a snap. I used the correct color code wires from Ford (purple, yellow, green) to passenger mirror and (red, blue, yellow) to drivers. 5 amp fuse.

Mounting the switch, once I decided on switch and position, was about 30 minutes of careful cutting till the hole was just exactly the way I wanted it. A moto tool and some number two needle files for that job.

I used Ford wiring from an earlier model since I couldn't get the plug-ins from Ford. That way I can remove either mirror or the door panel mounted switch by just disconnecting a harness. I didn't want to make the wiring all one piece, which would have been easier and cheaper, but made it hard to pop off a panel.
It works well, looks pretty stock. The mirror switch is up high, but it is in easy reach so I can sit naturally and adjust the mirror. I could have mounted it in the blank area below the headlight switch, but I was reluctant to cut into the one piece dash.

I was suprised that there was that much more visibility in the mirror. The stock ones looked pretty big, till I put the new ones on...
