Tail Gate Alarm

I have a bad habit of driving away with my tailgate down. With the tonneau cover on I cant see the gate and I have lost some Items.
Is there a way to wire into the reverse sensors to show the gate down or into the DOOR AJAR system.
Any Ideas would help.
This is for my 05 F150 ext cab.
Thanks

I havent tried it yet whith my truck , but I remember read another thread, in which the person said that his tailgate does set off his reverse sensor alarm when it is down.

If the tailgate is down, it should be in the field of vision from the park aid sensors.

when you start your truck up though and it goes from P, R, N, to D, once it hits R it will beep which means that its down... i don't mean to sound like a smart *** but it may be a cheap and effective way to find out as long as you are alert when you shift when starting up to pay attention to the reverse sensing system.
