Miles per gallon gauge

I have a 2005 F150 super crew 4x4 5.4L XLT. The manual says it may be possible for digital readout on the dash to display an average miles per gallon. My dash has a single push button. Pushing and releasing it toggles the display between total miles and the trip counter. In both cases, the display also shows the compass direction and the outside temperature.

Pushing the button and holding it down for around 30 seconds results in the direction and temperature disappearing and replaced by "CAL." I have no idea what that means.

Other than that, I can't figure out how to obtain the gas mileage. Does my truck include the option to display "average miles/gallon?" If so, how does one find it? The push button doesn't seem to offer the option.

cal is calibration for the compass...drive around in a complete circle a couple times, and it will recalibrate...then you need to set the region so that it corrects for true north... (check your manual) ive never seen the readouts give you a MPG reading but you could try holding down the button, and starting the truck...should bring up a diagnostic readout with some options... im sure others will chime in and give you the whole story

The Lariats and FX4's tell you your MPG's, but the XLT's, STX's and XL's do not.

There are a bunch of options when doing this.. I dont know what they are because they are abreviated... But there is digital speedo in there that is pretty cool.. I just wish I could figure out what some of the other options are for.. Im too lazy to walk out to my truck to get the manual..

lol---i love my fx4...i dont need to be reminded everytime i sit in it how low my mpg is...
it tells me the temperature, trip, od., compass- thats all we true off-roaders need to know... other than knowing that i have 36 gallons and it lasts ~500mi.

I thought it would show that if you went into the diagnostic mode... turn the key on but don't start it and hold the trip reset button down. Mine shows a digital tach, etc, and I could have sworn it would show MPG, but I have had a few since then...
