XLT console with floor shifter

I just purchased an XLT console from car-parts.com for $150 shipped. I also have the floor shift 4x4. I didn't think there would be any problem with putting the new console in but I just checked an realized that the console might interfere by not allowing me to put the transfer case into 4low.

I was thinking that I may be able to shift the console back a couple inches from the factory mounting location to allow me to use 4low. I don't know if this will require me to make some custom bracket but I'll find out when the console comes in. Has anyone tried to put a console in with the floor shifter? Did you have to shift it back at all?

Thanks,
Ray

I did this conversion, but I have the shift on the fly so no shifter to deal with there. You would be the first person that I know of to try this with the 4X4 shifter on the floor, but it still would be very doable. You'll just have to get a little creative with the mounting brackets...especially the rear one. Since I've had my new console in, I've felt that when you open it up the lid is positioned a little too far forward. I'm always bumping it while trying to dig something out of there while driving which makes it a bit awkward....therefore, I believe mounting it further back might not be a bad idea anyway. There are several of us on here that have done the shifter conversion...if you haven't already, check out FX4&HARLEY's gallery...lots of excellent pics and instructions to go by...and just ask if you have any questions.

I'd be concerned by moving the console back that the shifter cable would end up being too short and not shifting right. Have you thought of maybe upgrading to the electronic transfer case shifter? More cost, but might work out better in the end.

How'd you figure out which console is which on car-parts? I've been thinking of an XLT console someday. Guess you have to call or email on them?

I think he's talking about the regular XLT console. You can't get a floor shifter in an XLT. The floor shifter he mentioned is his 4WD shifter.

I was initially watching ebay and the prices were getting higher than what other members paid from car-parts. So this morning I spent about 15 minutes on car-parts and found one.

I mostly looked for a console in the color I wanted and called their phone number. I asked them if the console is made to connect to the dash or if it's stand alone, and asked which model it came from. When they told me that it doesn't connect to the dash, it was tan, new body style, complete, and that it came out of an xlt, I knew it was the one. I offered to email them a photo of what I wanted, but the guy on the phone said it wasn't necessary. They wanted $125 plus $25 for shipping.

I just hope I get what I paid for being that I actually haven't seen the thing.

How often do you use 4LO? If not very often you might consider mounting everything the way it is and when you need to use 4LO just snap the front plastic cup holder section out and you should have room to pull it back. If you take that part off the whole front of the console opens and you should have plenty of room. It takes 5 seconds to snap that piece off and 5 seconds to snap it back in when your done.

That may not be the solution your looking for but it would be WAY easier then trying to re-engineer the way the thing bolts to the floor.

I've never used 4LO and had no idea that it was that easy to remove the cup holders. If it's as easy as you say it is, then this sounds like good news. I thought I read recently that someone broke all the clips/tabs removing theirs, but that may have been a different piece. Since I haven't taken one apart, I really have no idea. Thanks for the idea.

There are 4 clips (edit...I just looked at the extra flow through I have sitting here beside me and I think there is 6 clips) that hold it on and I don't see how you could break them pulling them off. Just put your finger in the little hole that the lid shuts down into and pull up and it pops right off. They are way easier to pull out and put back than the plastic around the radio. The back piece has 2 screws holding it in, but the front doesnt have anything. I have had mine off quite a few times with no problems at all. You should be fine popping that piece out on occasion.
