Powdercoating wheels???

Does anyone have any experience with Powdercoating wheels? I am searching for a set of black or grey with chrome lip 17" but cant find anything I like. I was considering buying a set of chrome wheels and having them powdercoated. I was wondering what this might cost and if it was possible to powdercoat over a chrome or polished wheel. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Check out American Racing Victor series rims. I've got them and they are a dark grey with a silver rim. They're teflon coated so they clean up really easy. Check out my gallery for some pics

You should powdercoat the FX4 wheels. That would look sick!

Yes, some.

I can't see for 1000% sure, but I don't think those 2 processes will "mix" correctly, especially long term. I feel you would get better long term results PCing polished wheels.

What ever you decide proceed with a little caution. If you have wheels that were already powdercoated or have been "stripped" using heat the repeated process of heating a wheel can cause it to lose it's "heat treat" and it will fail in a catastrophic fashion. For example, if you are have a previously Powdercoated wheel stripped so you can Powdercoat it another color, MAKE SURE it is "Cold stripped" without any heat as is (has been) commonly done. This common "heat strip" practice an re-powdercoating has produced a LOT of wheel failures on the track with small 2500-3000lb "Street" Sports cars in the last year, wheels done this way on a 5000-6000lb truck would be even more dramatic (meaning BAD).

In a nutshell, Heating wheels one time during the Powdercoat process has not shown to be a problem, BUT heating them once for powdercoating, heating them to strip then and then heating them again for Powdercoating is a NO NO..

Thanks for the info 928, that is something that I hadn't thought of. I think I will just try to find something already black. I can't take the chance of a failure with the family in the truck.

BlkCowboy, I love your black wheels on the king ranch and am considering going that route but I am more interested in finding a smaller rim, 17" or 18", and putting more of an offroad tire on. My search hasnt produced much yet though so I may end up go with 20" or 22".

Thanks for the input.

Not that I am an expert or anything but i powdercoat at home and have done alot..... I personally would not powdercoat over chrome.... the chrome will start to peel and then the powdercoat/chrome will start to flake. I was just thinking this morning of powdercoating my factory larait wheels black for winter use since I have my chrome wheels for the summer. Powdercoat likes a nice clean bear metal surface.
