Redsoxfan- What did you find out about loud grinding noise. My 05 supercew is having the same problem and the dealer refuses to fix the truck b/c can't replicate problem when it gets there.

2005 Supercrew Metal Grinding

Do you have any suggestions or advice to fix or get dealership to figure out what is going on with truck. My 2005 supercrew is doing the same thing and everytime I take it to the dealer, it does not happen when in their possession?

I have the same problem and is becomming more and more frequent. I will be calling the dealer within the next couple of days and I seriously doubt that the dealer can duplicate the problem. I'll probably arm myself with the TSB report. Thanks Onbely!!

I went in with a printout of the TSB and told the service writer exactly what was happening, the front hubs were trying to engage on their own. I told them how it happened in the rain going 70 on the highway and that it was a safety issue. He gave me the runaound like I was some naive customer and they would look into it. They fixed it citing the TSB I gave them and its been fixed for two weeks now. Tell them it happened in the rain going 70 and that its unsafe to drive and that you are afraid it could cause you to lose control of the vehicle (unlikely, but it will force them to look at it) If they still wont just fix it b/c they "cant duplicate the issue" call up ford cust service and say the same things.

Redsoxfan - Thanks

I just got off the phone with Ford Customer Service and they are saying that problem has been elevated and sent to Customer Care. They called dealer who has my truck for past 2 days and they still can't replicate problem. I should hear from Ford in 1-2 business days. They will not fix unless problem is duplicated and recommended me taking to another dealer, which won't cause the issue to happen again. I am about ready to pay for damn part myself b/c working with these guys are so frustrating. How do I get my hands on that TSB report? I will keep you posted and appreciate the suggestion on the rain, it seemed to get their attention a little more. I just want the stupid noise to go away. Do you or anyone on this site know how much part would cost to have replaced at dealer including labor, just curious?

Grinding Noise

I have had my truck in the shop 3 times for the grinding noise. The last time I gave them a copy of the TSB. They said they could not duplicate the problem and did no work. I know that I have driven 75 miles with the hubs grinding. I had a talk with the GM of the dealership and he has contacted Ford about the problem. What really got me stirred up was the fact that I took my truck in on Thursday, and had to call them Saturday morning to ask if it was finished. I guess if I didn't call and ask, it would still be sitting there. I guess when I get 20 miles out in the bushes, and find out that the 4 X 4 is not working that they will pay for the tow charge. NOT! If I get results, I will post here.

Talking Grinding Noise on the FX4

Just got a call from the dealer about my grinding noise. They could not get Ford to authorize the repairs, but they are going to do it any way. I guess I don't have to look for a new dealer for the next vehicle.

I had a similar experience with dealer. I decided to call Ford direct thanks to Redsox fan. They called me back instantly once heard that highway speeds and rain about caused an accident. Dealer had my truck for 1 week to replicate problem with no success. Ford paid for rental car (Chevy, which I thought was odd) and they said they checked the computer on the 7th day of having my truck and 400 miles later, that the error message came up and they ended up replacing my IWE Solenoid for 4x4 and the noise hasn't come back yet and hopefully never again.
Anyone know if this coud or has caused any other damage to truck?
Thanks for everyone's help!!!!

this problem isn't isolated to just 4x4's right?

i have an '04 4x2 Lariat Screw that just started to make this horrid grinding noise from the driver side.

i was running a little lean and kept getting an check engine light so i read up on the forums and cleaned my mass air flow sensor on my cold air intake. i reset the battery afterwards since i didn't feel like running over to kragen just to reset the code and after i started her up, she started making that noise.

I have a '05 f-150 and have experienced all the same grinding issues that i have read throughout but in addition to the grinding/4x4 not working the a/c doesn't work either. Narrowed the issue to the relay switch that controls both. I have had the relay switch replaced 3 times along with vacuum iwe solenoid and battery. vac lines have been checked for water, cracks and pressure checked. 2 fault codes have come up on the 4x4 one being low voltage the other being high voltage (dont know the actual code) which prompted the battery change. When I leave the dealership all is good until the next day or two and the 4x4/a/c go out again. I think the dealership is running out of ideas and so am I. Does anyone have any suggestions where to look next?

The IWE problems that have been mentioned in this post have been brought up many, many times in this forum. (Use the SEARCH function.) And the grinding caused by a vacuum leak, bad IWE and / or bad IWE solenoid is unique to 4x4 trucks. If you have a grinding noise in a 4x2 truck the first thing I'd suspect is a bad front wheel bearing / hub.
