Singing the Magnaflow Blues...Please Help!

Problem: 18 inch stainless steel catback SIDO, purchased through Troyer, too loud on the highway and accelerating.

Solutions:
1. Bigger Muffler
2. Resonator

1. Bigger Muffler- Chris Adams had his 18 inch muffler replaced with a 24 inch muffler in his catback. Said it significantly reduced the "noise" to a very very low hum on the highway

1a. I can't find a stainless steel 24 inch body magnaflow muffler anywhere. I don't think they make them. I have to have stainless steel because I live up North. Did Chris Adams go with an aluminized? Can a 5X11 muffler be used and not hurt performance? Because they do make a stainless steel 5X11 22 inch body 28 inch overall.

I asked Troyer Performance to trade me an 18 for a 24 but they didn't want to do that. Which I guess I can understand. I'm a little disappointed with the noise description on the website.

2. Resonator - 05SilverFX4 installed a resonator before the muffler and he said it decreased his noise in half.

2a. I don't know if cutting the noise in half will be enough to justify having to take out the pipe before the muffler, cutting it down 4 inches then re-installing the entire thing.

Which one should I do? I really need help quieting this thing down or it will drive me nuts. I also can't spend a ton more cash either.

The 18 inch muffler has less than 20 miles on it and is flawless. I'm holding off driving the truck since it's on there and don't want to put anymore miles on that muffler or take more of the noise. I'm driving my older car now. I'd be willing to sell it to anyone. email me at kuba0043@umn.edu

They will have the 24 in stainless. It won't hurt performance.

Ok, hopefully Troyer is able to find it, because I can't find it on any websites; even the Magnaflow website.

So which would likely solve the problem better, the resonator or new muffler?

Also, if I switched out to the 24 inch muffler, I'd just cut 4 inches off the pipe ahead of the muffler right, to get it to fit?

Scroll down too ...

MAGNAFLOW 5x8 OVAL STAINLESS Quiter

MAGNAFLOW 5x11 OVAL STAINLESS Quitest

And you would have to cut the new body length (minus) old body length

Ok so 5X11 22 inch body 28 inch overall. So I'd cut 4 inches out of the long stock pipe ahead of the muffler. It's $98.36 on hottexhaust.com.

What would make it quieter? The 5X11 22 inch body 28 inch overall muffler or the 14 inch body resonator on the 18 inch body?

What are my odds of selling the 18 inch stainless magnaflow muffler?

Got off the phone with Troyer and they said it would void my warranty if I replace the Magnaflow 18 inch muffler with the Magnaflow 24 inch muffler.

How the heck can that be? I mean, I wouldn't be cutting anything other than the stock pipe and not cutting any of the magnaflow stuff. Sounds kind of messed up to me.

Maybe it's time to cut your losses and pull it all off, put the stock back on, and sell your Maggie on ebay or in the classifieds?

It sounds like you're exceedingly displeased with it and trying to 'nurse' it to your pleasure. Odds are against you ever being totally satisfied with this setup.

Best of luck to you bud.

Void what warranty? If you buy the 24" Mag its going to come with a warranty also. I believe you can take any Mag muffler to any Mag dealer for warranty issues. Go to your local muffler shop and have them put on the muffler you want. I went with the 24" for this very reason but I had heard the 18" on a friends truck before I bought. Just go get what you want.

Im with RP on this. The system you have isn't even that loud but different strokes for different folks.

I can't sell this thing on ebay because there is no way I'll even get close to the money for it that I ended up paying. The camaro style tips came in today and it reaffirmed that once perfected, this setup will look flat out awesome. I just need to figure out whether to do the bigger muffler or resonator in front of the muffler.

I just got off the phone with Magnaflow and they said they'll go ahead and keep the warranty as long as nothing "Magnaflow" is cut.

They also said my choices to quiet it down are as follows (in order of making it quieter)

1. Next Quietest: keeping the system how it is and put a magnaflow resonator in front of the exhaust. COST: $58

2. Quietest: Moving up to a 5X11 oval with a 22 inch body. HOWEVER, the pipes coming out the rear would have to be slightly bent outwards to fit because the space between the two rear exit pipes would be larger than the space between the exit pipes on the 5X8. Magnaflow would still warranty the parts, however if something went wrong because of the modification then they would not. COST: $98

Either way I need to go to a Exhaust shop because I'd have to have the pipe in front of the muffler cut, either for the resonator or for the new muffler.

Can you hear your 24" SIDO on the highway? Only a little more than stock or a lot more, but less than the 18"?

Whole exhaust cat back systems primaliry are way too much money for factory engines like ours. The only benifits of getting a complete catback are mandrel bends. For less money you can achieve the same results with a weld-on muffler and a tip. The only reason i could see for mandrel bends would be if you had headers and your exhaust ports opened up the heads. If you think your getting alot of performance out of this around town, your not.

I agree, I think a totally custom bent exhaust would have been your best bet because you could customize it for your specific needs. By the time you get your Magnaflow system, and modify it to accept the larger muffler, then the tips, then the tip height, and possibly different muffler output pipe locations, a custom bent catback would be easier. Like was mentioned, the only real advantage of a prepackaged catback would be the madrel bent pipes, which for a mainly stock engine does not make a huge difference. If you are going for strictly cosmetic looks, without the sounds, that seems like it would be your best option. I picked up my magnaflow for very cheap local here at full line performance, online here

Good luck. Later

If its just the output volume youre concerned with, placing inline resonators in there should really get it to where you like it.
