extended warranty: Worth it??

Man,...I gotta say I'm a bit scared reading all of these major major problems with the 04-05s. Mine's been in the shop once for the clunking rear end. I'm supposed to keep the yoke lubed every 20K right?!?
Anyone past the 30K and have they used the extended warranty? Cost, where did you purchase it etc??
Thanks!
Allen

I always buy an extended warranty when I plan to own the vehicle long after it's paid for. I'd hate to have a major problem between 36,000 and 75,000 miles and not have it paid for. $1,000 to extend the warranty is nothing compared to having to replace any component that cost significantly more, i.e. transmission, engine. I'm nearing 30,000 miles but have been lucky and have had no problems with the truck. Still have 45,000 left on the warranty which gives me some peace of mind.

The extended warranty is gamble on both sides, the manufacturers and the buyers. The manufacturer is betting that the vehicle wont have any problems and they are just padding their profits on the vehicle. The buyer of the extended warranty is betting that the vehicle will have some problem/problems that will be repaired using the extended warranty. If you use it once it has usually paid for itself. Use it 2 or more times and you're probably money ahead. For most people it is just piece of mind that if something goees wrong, they have the extended waranty. If you plan on on modding your vehicle much, you have to decide if the mods you do are possibly going to void your warranty.

I bought the PremiumCare 7/75. I think it is worth it. I have bought extended warranties and received more than the purchase price in covered repairs on my last 2 vehicles. I bet I'll use the PremiumCare also.

I opted to not buy the extended warranty on mine. The two other Ford trucks I've owned worked perfectly long after the factory warranty expired. The only things I had to replace were things not covered under warranty anyhow (tires, clutch, ball joints...). I think in general extended warranties are a rip off. In most cases it's just pure profit for the retailers.

Look for (or negotiate with) a dealer offering a deal such as I got on my 04 (in writing); if I don't use the 7/75 extended waranty the toal amount is refunded.
Signature Assurance program cost the dealer about $ 225 on the ESP so it might
be hard to get. I bought mine when the 04s where new and they were pushing
the deal.

Don't become fixated on MAJOR problems developing in your truck. More importantly find a great dealer service department....that's where most MAJOR problems occur and no extended warranty can cure that! I am fortunate that I have a great dealer who fixes problems the first time and in my case I figured it was worth the $1000 for the extended warranty.

The first extended warranty I purchased was on my last truck (97 chevy). Within 6 months I had over $5500 in repairs done to the truck. I thought I had been ripped off when I paid $1400 for the plan. It is just a gamble that you take either way. I had aquote for one plan that was around $700 for the 6yr coverage for my truck. There are several plans to suit your needs and it is just like buying the truck you can get a lower price from one dealer to the next.

I would highly recommend getting the Extended warranty, I wish I had done this on my 2001 Screw, engine has blown up after 5 years and less than 100k miles :-( . Either broke a piston or threw a rod (50k mile replacment engine on the way). If anyone wants a super deal on a 2001 Lariat Screw 4x4 fully loaded let me know.

I just purchased a 2005 FTX Screw and got the PremiumCare 7 year 100K warranty worked into the deal (along with a 3 year maint. agreement) and with the 0% interest I am only paying approx. 25-30 a month extra for the X warranty.

Roll of the Dice

I opted not to get the xtended warranty. This is my third truck and I had a tranny go on the first one but it was at 118k so it saw its life before it broke. I see your dilemma with the newer models cause they have had some problems. I have an 03 and it has been a good truck so I decided to gamble and not buy the warranty. I feel it is a game of chance but if I had an 04 from what I have read I think I might get the warranty it just depends on how you feel about your truck and the problems you have had.
