Head on Accident Tonight.... Airbags didn't go off?

Hello guys, I'm sad to say that my F150 isn't looking too good right now. Some drunk guy made a left turn right into me while I was driving through an intersection. My front end collieded with his passenger door (early 1990's F150) at about 60 km/hr and the Air Bags didn't go off.

I had my seat belt on, and was fine. The passenger in the other truck was banged up and the paramedics took him and the driver to the hospital.

The collision was almost square in the center of the front bumper, and the entire bumper is crunched in. The hood is buckled. The two front side panles are buckeled. My Headlights are smashed and pushed way back in the hood. My billet grill is ****ed, and bent in all directions. My lower bumper is also pushed right under the truck.

Anyways, I'm suprised that the bags didn't go off. THe firefighters at the scene were also suprised the bags didn't deploy.
Anyone else have this happen to them?

I'll get some pics up when I go to the compound lot to see the truck.

Sorry about the wreck. My guess on the airbags is they are speed dependent. Could be a combination of impact sensor and deployment speed.

The primary crash severity sensor doesn't necessarily work off of speed, although it is a variable. More important is the rate of deceleration. It you hit something that gives, such as another vehicle from the broadside, the rate of deceleration probably won't be sharp enough to deploy an airbag.

Sucks about your truck though.

It has been discussed here numerous times. You are not hurt, and walked away. If the bags went off, you might have a broken nose for no reason. I think the bags did what they were supposed to do!

Sorry to hear your truck is all smahed up...but glad you ok.

I know this is true....but still, I've NEVER heard anyone complain about an airbag going off during a wreck.....but then again the ones that walk away don't come my way, only the ones that have to be toted off in that little van with the lights on top.

Sorry about your rig. Seeing as it's at the compound, I'm guessing MPI is writing it off? It always amazes me how the will write off a vehicle that is fixable, and repair ones that should be off the road. My dad had his Taurus t-boned a few years back. Autopac assesed $6500 damage and wrote it off, then paid my dad $7800 in the settlement. That's what he got AFTER he bought it back. They could have fixed the car and saved $1300.

You DON'T want an airbag to go off if you don't need it. Trust me...

If the computer didn't determine that the crash met deployment specs, it won't fire.

By the way, I HATE F&%$#N drunk drivers. They have killed more than one of dads fine fords.

Agreed on all levels.

I've been in one accident (knock on wood) and the airbag went off and it really shouldn't have (Ford Explorer).. burnt my nose and lip.. was quite painful.

Thanks for the sympathy guys..... I don't have any info on the truck as of yet. Some of the firefighters thought it would be a write off, but I'm not too sure.

Either way, it is a leased vehicle so if it is a write off I just pick another off the lot. Kinda sucks that I'll have to mod it all over again.

I'll be talking to the Insurance company today and making a claim..... I'm pretty sure that they will cover the cost of a rental truck in full because the other driver was 100% at fault.

Looks like i'll be driving a silver 150 with an ENTERPRISE sticker on the bumper for a while!

I think its standard procedure to take it to the compound lot on Plesis, then assess the damage there. Normally it takes them a few days to get around to it though. They hauled it away on a flat bed last night, so hopefully its there right now.

Curiosity: Why would you spend that kind of $ to mod the vehicle only to turn it back in in a few years???
