having your truck lifted doesnt really affect your tranny i dont think...but anyway, thump, i would bet something is sliping somewhere, i wouldnt be suprised if it wasnt your torque converter, or im not sure how our trucks are engaged in gear, cables or whatnot, but maybe if it is cable driven, the cable just needs to be tightend up, if this were the case it would be in between gears if you will, or on the verge of going in gear and staying out of gear, basically not causing enough friction to get the truck going without the gears spinnin real fast, this to would prolly explain your "clunk" and it completely not engaging....but then again, i dont know that much about the new trannys so....but that is what i would think...let us know man
O, if they give you crap about the lift, just give it to me ok man..

hmmm...my 92 explorer had a similar problem. engaging the 4wd made a clunk sound, not really loud, but audible. took it fishing, and noticed that the truck was slipping in and out of gear, revs were unstable and then kapoots. the problem was a cracked trans fluid hose...and lost tranny fluid...tranny was saved...luckily.

Okay you guys misunderstood what I was trying to explain. Go out and dig your truck down in 2WD and than put it in 4WD if you don't back up before you go forward it will clunk, I know its not just mine cause a few of my friends have the same thing but whenever I put it in reverse first it won't clunk.

ha, ok thump, i know what you are saying, mine does the same thing, if i dig the rear wheels down, and then put her in 4hi, the rear wheels turn for about half a turn and then clunk, the 4x4 trany drops in and she goes forward, but i have never had any problem getting it in or out of 4x4. How does our 4x4 work, i mean, my old chevy used sucktion cups, hence it never really made a clunk, so if our fords use an actual drop in feature, where it drops down the clunk is prolly just the gears catching each other and locking themselves together...but what kinda 4x4 do we have, suction cups, mechanical, etc..

Why do some of you get worked up about hearing a "clunk" when engaging 4WD? Your hubs are locking, it's not going to be "silent". There's no need to back up when you engage 4WD whether it's into 4Hi or 4Lo.
Thump, I hope your truck gets fixed under warranty and the dealer does you right. If I understand you correctly, you're digging your back tires down into the sand in 2wd, then placing it in 4HI to get out?

Update: I just called them and they said they were tearing it down but wouldn't know until the morning.
Im not getting worked up about hearing a clunk. The thing that I don't believe is right is when Im already moving and than all of a sudden the front finally locks in, than clunking. If you saw it, you would know it wasn't good. Trust me.
Its happened before, I try not to use 4WD unless I have to.
