Towing with the 5.4
Towing with the 5.4
I am thinking about buying a new truck with a 5.4, I will be getting a 24' enclosed trailer(don't know weight) and putting a 3,000lb mustang + gear in it. Using as my hauler to the races. Will I beat the crap out of this truck or should I opt for the 6.0PSD and HOPE I get a good one. Thanks
Anything that large is going to be heavy. Although I love my F-150, I would not recommend one for the towing you're gonna be doing. Get the 6.0 PSD. All the bugs have been worked out by now, there is no "hoping you get a good one." At least not from what I have seen. Good luck!
I wouldn't recommend this either. I tow a 3200 lb boat w/trailer and notice a huge difference in performance. Anything over this capacity would put significant drag on performance and would most likely wear the drivetrain out quickly if you tow on a regular basis.
One more vote for the PSD...the torqshift tranny it's mated too is sooo sweet. 1/2 ton trucks IMHO are better suited to the 4000 lb. and under range....that's not to say you can't tow more...I just wouldn't on a regular basis. Buy a truck that's designed with heavy-duty towing in mind.

Thanks guys, I have just read so many bad things about the 6.0 I was afraid I would buy a 40k truck and have nothin but problems with the motor. The diesel stop has alot of info on the 6.0.
Another vote here for the SuperDuty. You are definitely a candidate for the powerstroke. And say what you want, a lifted SuperDuty with a monster exhaust may perhaps be the sweetest truck on earth!

I wouldnt think about getting the PSD unless it was primarily a tow vehicle.
Even though the v10 is the poor mans diesel, it does everything the PSD does minus the gas mileage.
I had a 97 7.3 PSD 350 and hated it.
If its a weekend hauler the new 5.4 f150 would suffice.
My good friend hauled exotics ( as part of his business ) in a 100,000 mile 5.4 Expedition before he got his v10 excursion. It did ok.
I'd say if you were towing often then you'd probably want something stronger. But I wouldn't go with a PSD until the new 07 was out in Fall 06. Why buy something that will drop in value like crazy when the new one is out.
Although the F150 is supposed to be able to tow 9000+ lbs. So you can do it, just wouldn't be as comfortable as the PSD. I mean why would the rate the truck for 9000+ lbs if they can only really handle 4000?

I think you will be fine to pull your mustang on the weekends with the f150.
I think the 6.0 is meant to pull dozers and stuff like that. Id think the 6.0 would be a little unnecessary.
