Foose style

Hey I was watching Overhaulin' the other day and Foose took an 05' Mustang, and customized the honeycomb grill. He hand painted the outside edges of the honeycomb holes on the grill silver, leaving the insides black. The guy doing it was doing it by hand. My question is, if I wanted to do that to my 05' F-150 would I be able to do brush that by hand with a can of factory matched paint. Or even tape it off and paint it using my airbrush? Any thoughts on this would be helpful.

Thanks

i dont see why not. its up to you though. it all depends on how confident you are with a brush. i think it would be easier to paint them on and wipe off your mistakes than to mask off every single honeycomb. btw... nice truck

I guess so...Would I just need to go down to the auto body supply place or where to get the paint to match my truck?

My thought is that the guy doing it for Foose was likely very experienced and maybe even the best in the Chip Foose TV world.

Should you try it? I would.

If Foose's guy did it by hand that may be the best way to do it. I'm sure its not a new mod. There's not much new left.

Make sure you can swap out your grille if you don't like it.

Something like an extremely short nap roller could work to just paint the edges. Another method, probably no faster than doing it by hand, is shooting the grille with a couple of fairly heavy coats of silver then shoot over it with black. Gently take a sanding block with something like 600 grit wet or dry over the surface to get to the silver exposed on only the edges.

Photos of what the hell I am talking about! :)

This is what I was wanting to do to my grill, especially with my truck being silver.....hand paint the honeycomb outlines on the factory grill. This is what Foose did on this Mustang, i think it looks kick ***! Sick of billet grills everyone has one. Also any additional comments on how I may go about doing this. I was thinking of getting a small pint on factory paint and going at it with a small model brush. That laquer wouldnt leave brush strokes would it? I bought an extra black honeycomb grill to give her a shot! Let me know your guys thoughts...Thanks

i say go for it. i'd take a brush right to it, then carefully knock it down with a wet sand and repaint it a couple times to get it smooth and thick. then paint on a good couple coats of clear. the little bottles that ford offers should work just fine. i'm interested to see how it turns out. good luck. btw... nice truck! lol mine's pretty much exactly the same as yours...

I think it would be easiest with one of those paint pens - unless you are very good with a brush - it would be hard to get it perfect.

You may not be able to get a paint pen with the exact silver - but since it will be on the grill it will not match 100% anyway - and you will have the edge of the grill to separate the colors anyway.

Just my overpriced 2 cents.
